“We need a national leader who can heal the wounds of society”

This was common sentiment of Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Spokesperson General Restituto Padilla, Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Committee on Basic Ecclesial Communities Executive Secretary Rev. Fr. Amado Picardal, and Atty. Anna Tarhata Basman, Legal Team Head for the Government of the Philippines (GPH) Peace Panel for the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) during the third Veritas Servant Leadership Halalan Forum 2016.

Padilla said during the Radio Veritas-organized forum that focuses on the qualities of a good servant leader.

The AFP Spokesperson also explained that no matter how long the healing process would be, it is still possible to happen if the politician is really committed to it.

Gaano man katagal itong i-take, kailangan committed siya dun sa proseso,” Padilla added.

For Rev. Fr. Amado Picardal, a full understanding of the causes of the conflicts in our country is one way on how a politician can start to heal the wounds of the society.

“There are historical roots for the conflicts that we have to understand. A leader must be able to understand, ano ba ang sanhi ng sugat?,” Fr. Picardal explained.

He also added that reconciliation can be made if we look into the people’s common grounds, and that as Filipinos, we are brothers and sisters.

“It is important to admit that we are brothers and sisters, magkakababayan tayo, magkakapatid tayo, because once we do not acknowledge that, mahirap talaga. Para sa Christian settlers it is the land of promise, para sa mga Muslim at Lumads it is their ancestral land. We have to begin with the common ground, Pilipino tayong lahat, magkakapatid tayo,” Fr. Picardal said.

As representative of a minority group, Atty. Basman on her part said that transitional justice and reconciliation is the most important part of the Comprehensive Agreement on Bangsamoro.

Tapos siguro yung pag-amin at pagpapatawad. Busman.

She also added that the success of the implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Bangsamoro (CAB) for peace and reconciliation would depend on the understanding of the leader towards the situation.

Busman explained.

In their concluding message, Gen. Padilla, Fr. Picardal and Atty. Busman described their ideal national leader that our country needs.

Gen. Padilla stressed.

Fr. Picardal left an important question that should guide the electorate in voting for the coming election.

Picardal asked.

Atty. Busman said in his concluding message that we as member of the voting public, should not just look on what kind of person a particular candidate is, we should also look into ourselves if we reach out to others.

Busman said.
