2 Corinto 4, 7-15

Pagbasa mula sa ikalawang sulat ni Apostol San Pablo sa mga taga-Corinto

Mga kapatid, kaming pinagkalooban ng kayamanang espirituwal na ito ay hamak — kung baga sa sisidlan ay palayok lamang — upang ipakilalang ang di malirip na kapangyarihan ay sa Diyos, at hindi amin. Ginigipit kami sa kabi-kabila ngunit di nagagapi. Kung minsa’y nag-aalinlangan kami ngunit di nawawalan ng pag-asa. Pinag-uusig kami ngunit di nawawalan ng kaibigan; naibubuwal ngunit di tuluyang nailulugmok. Lagi kong taglay sa aking katawan ang kamatayan ni Hesus upang sa pamamagitan ng katawan ko’y mahayag ang kanyang buhay. Kami’y laging nabibingit sa kamatayan alang-alang kay Kristo upang sa aming katawang may kamatayan ay mahayag ang kanyang buhay. Anupat habang ako’y dahan-dahang namamatay, nagkakaroon naman kayo ng buhay na walang hanggan.

Sinasabi sa Kasulatan, “Nagsasalita ako sapagkat ako’y sumasampalataya.” Bunga ng gayong diwa ng pananampalataya, nagsasalita rin ako sapagkat ako ma’y sumasampalataya. Sapagkat nalalaman kong ang Diyos na muling bumuhay sa Panginoong Hesus ang siya ring bubuhay sa akin kasama niya, at magdadala sa inyo at sa akin sa kanyang piling. Ang lahat ng pagtitiis ko ay sa kapakanan ninyo upang sa pagdami ng mga nakatatanggap ng mga kaloob ng Diyos, lalo namang dumami ang magpapasalamat at magpupuri sa kanya.

Nang lingapin tayo ng Diyos at sa Sion ay ibalik
ang nangyaring kasaysaya’y parang isang panaginip.
Lahat tayo ay natuwa, masasayang nagsiawit.

Ang nagtanim na may luha
ay aaning natutuwa.

Ang sabi ng mga bansang nagmamasid sa paligid,
“Ang ginawa ng Diyos nila ay dakila, anong rikit!”
Dakila ngang masasabi, pambihira ang ginawa,
kaya naman kami ngayon, kagalaka’y di kawasa!

Kung paanong inuulan yaong mga tuyong batis,
sa sariling bayan namin, kami, Poon, ay ibalik.
Silang mga nagbubukid na nagtanim na may luha,
bayaan mo na mag-aning masasaya’t natutuwa.

Yaong mga nagsihayong dala’y binhi’t nananangis,
ay aawit na may galak, dala’y ani pagbalik!

MABUTING BALITA
Mateo 20, 20-28

Ang Mabuting Balita ng Panginoon ayon kay San Mateo

Noong panahong iyon, lumapit kay Hesus ang asawa ni Zebedeo, kasama ang kanyang mga anak. May ibig siyang hilingin, kaya’t lumuhod siya sa harapan ni Hesus. “Ano ang ibig mo?” Tanong ni Hesus. Sumagot siya, “Sana’y ipagkaloob ninyo sa dalawa kong anak na ito ang karapatan na makaupong katabi ninyo sa inyong kaharian — isa sa kanan at isa sa kaliwa.” “Hindi ninyo nalalaman ang inyong hinihingi,” sabi ni Hesus sa kanila. “Mababata ba ninyo ang hirap na babatahin ko?” “Opo,” tugon nila. Sinabi ni Hesus, “Ang hirap na babatahin ko’y batatahin nga ninyo. Ngunit wala sa akin ang pagpapasiya kung sino ang mauupo sa aking kanan at sa aking kaliwa. Ang mga luklukang sinasabi ninyo’y para sa mga pinaghandaan ng aking Ama.”

Nang marinig ito ng sampung alagad, nagalit sila sa magkapatid. Kaya’t pinalapit sila ni Hesus at sinabi sa kanila, “Alam ninyo na ang pinuno ng mga Hentil ay naghahari sa kanila, at ang mga dinadakila ang siyang nasusunod. Ngunit hindi ganyan ang dapat umiral sa inyo. Sa halip, ang sinuman sa inyo na ibig maging dakila ay dapat maging lingkod. At sinumang ibig maging pinuno ay dapat maging alipin ninyo, tulad ng Anak ng Tao na naparito, hindi upang paglingkuran kundi upang maglingkod at ialay ang kanyang buhay upang matubos ang marami.”

PANALANGIN NG BAYAN
Hulyo 25
San Tiago, Apostol

Si San Tiago, kapatid ni Juan, ay tinawag mula sa pagsusursi ng kanyang lambat upang sumunod kay Kristo. Sa tulong ng Apostol na natutong maglingkod sa iba, manalangin tayo.

Panginoon, dinggin Mo ang aming panalangin.
o kaya
Panginoon, basbasan Mo ang Iyong bayang itinatag sa mga Apostol.

Ang mga lingkod ng Simbahan nawa’y gampanan ang kanilang tungkulin sa diwa ng paglilingkod at paglalaan ng sarili, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Ang mga naglilingkod sa bayan nawa’y makatupad sa kanilang tungkulin nang may katapatan at pag-aalay, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Magkaroon nawa ng maraming kabataang bukas-loob na tutugon sa tawag para sa pagpapari at buhay-relihiyoso, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Ang mga maysakit nawa’y matutong makibahagi sa kalis ng paghihirap ni Kristo, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Ang mga yumao nawa’y tanggapin sa kagalakan ng Kaharian ng Diyos, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Diyos na aming Ama, tulungan nawa kami ng mga panalangin ni San Tiago sa paglalapit namin sa iyo ng aming mga kahilingan. Nawa ang paglalakbay naming ito sa buhay ay mamukod sa paglilingkod sa iba. Hinihiling namin ito sa pamamagitan ni Kristo na aming Panginoon. Amen.

WHEN WAR SPREADS, WHO IS SAFE?

I am deeply concerned about the continuing escalation of the war in the Middle East. What began with American and Israeli attacks on Iran last February has developed into a wider regional conflict, with Iran retaliating against American military installations in several Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. Iran maintains that it has nothing against its Gulf Arab neighbors and that its targets are mainly American military facilities located within their territories. But the consequences of these attacks are being felt far beyond the military bases. Civilian lives, airports, energy facilities and international shipping are being placed at risk.

Saudi Arabia has also been drawn into the conflict, with renewed missile and drone attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement. Just this weekend, attacks were reported near Riyadh’s international airport. The danger is that countries which have sought to avoid direct involvement in the war are nevertheless being drawn into its expanding circle of violence.

My apprehension is not only for the citizens of these Gulf countries, but also for the millions of Filipinos who live and work there. According to Philippine government estimates reported in March 2026, there are approximately 2.35 million Filipinos in the six Gulf states: 975,000 in the UAE, 813,000 in Saudi Arabia, 250,000 in Qatar, 211,000 in Kuwait, 56,000 in Bahrain and 49,000 in Oman. These are our fellow Filipinos who have left their families behind to earn a living abroad. Their safety and welfare must remain a priority for our government.

I am equally troubled by Israel’s continuing involvement in the war against Iran, even as its military operations in Gaza and Lebanon continue. In Gaza, Palestinians are still dying despite the ceasefire, while families displaced by the war are forced to live among the ruins of their destroyed homes. In Lebanon, renewed Israeli strikes and exchanges of fire with Hezbollah threaten to unravel the fragile ceasefire. How much more suffering must ordinary people endure before the parties involved seriously commit themselves to peace?

This situation has become a personal concern for me as well. I am scheduled to travel to Rome for meetings in early October, taking an Emirates flight that will transit through the UAE. During my previous trip to Rome, I deliberately avoided the Gulf region and took a China Airlines flight through Beijing instead. I now find myself wondering whether I should have made the same choice for this forthcoming journey.

There is another dimension to this war that troubles me deeply: the growing use of artificial intelligence in modern warfare. Reports indicate that AI-assisted systems have already been used in military targeting operations against Iran, as well as in Gaza and Lebanon. These technologies can accelerate the identification and selection of targets, compressing decisions that once took hours into mere minutes or seconds.

At the same time, leading AI developers themselves have been warning about the growing difficulty of understanding and controlling the behavior of increasingly powerful AI systems. This raises a disturbing question: Could AI-assisted military decision-making have contributed to the speed and scale of this recent escalation? We do not yet have sufficient evidence to answer that question. But it is a question that urgently deserves investigation, especially as the race toward artificial superintelligence continues.

Are we allowing the development of technologies that can accelerate the machinery of war faster than human wisdom, moral discernment and diplomacy can restrain it?

I pray that the leaders of the nations involved will find the courage to step back from this dangerous escalation and return to the negotiating table. Peace cannot be achieved simply by developing more sophisticated weapons or by threatening one another with greater destruction.

The lives of millions of innocent people, including our own Filipino brothers and sisters working in the Middle East, are at stake. We cannot afford to leave their future to the logic of war, much less to machines that may one day operate beyond our capacity to understand and control them.

Gospel Reading for September 22, 2026 – Luke 8: 19-21

ALL THE TIME

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and they wish to see you.” He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”

There are those who interpret this Gospel to mean that, for Jesus, Mary and his relatives were not important to him. But why would someone who preached about love ALL THE TIME fail to give importance to the woman who bore him in her womb, nursed him, raised him according to Jewish tradition, and, most of all, whose “yes” was so important for the Father’s plan of salvation to come to fruition?

It was precisely for this reason that Jesus pointed out the quality that made Mary truly blessed: she heard the Word of God and acted on it. Even while dying on the Cross, Jesus entrusted Mary to John, symbolically giving her to all of us as our Mother.

Although it is not mentioned in the Bible, Jesus would naturally have gone outside to see Mary and his relatives. After he began his public ministry at the age of thirty, he no longer lived with Mary. Let us not forget that Jesus was born into a family, and being Jesus, his family surely mattered very much to him.

Lord Jesus, help us always to listen to your Word and to act upon it. Amen.

Lord Jesus;
for those hoping to see
you, to talk to you even for a while
like your mother and brothers
in the gospel;
why did you not go out to see
them right away?
I felt sad.
And disappointed.

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside annd they wish to see you.” He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of G0d and act on it” (Luke 8:19-21).

Luke never bothered
to tell us what they wanted
from you, Lord;
but your reply got me praying
more deeply and these
I realized:
you love us so much
Jesus,
your words always in us,
in our hearts
but many times we do not listen;
Mary and your brothers know
that so well
and they never protested;
in fact,
they affirmed your words
by remaining silent,
trusting you as always;
most of all,
your reply teaches us
your disciples
to widen,
to enlarge
the bounds of our family:
if we choose to listen
and act on the Word of God,
we must at the same time
become a member of the
family of Jesus.

Teach us to be like
that king in the first reading
willing to bow
his will and desires to
God despite his power
and authority;
give me a listening heart,
a will so pliant to your ways
so that I may welcome those
trying to get close to you
Jesus because they hurt;
many times our pains
are so pronounced because
we have no room
for those seeking you,
Jesus.
