UNANG PAGBASA
Mangangaral 3, 1-11

Pagbasa mula sa aklat ng Mangangaral

Ang lahat ng pangyayari sa daigdig ay nagaganap sa panahong itinakda ng Diyos.
Ang panahon ng pagsilang at panahon ng pagkamatay;
ang panahon ng pagtatanim at panahon ng pagbunot ng tanim.
Ang panahon ng pagpatay at panahon ng pagpapagaling;
ang panahon ng paggiba at panahon ng pagtatayo.
Ang panahon ng pagluha at panahon ng pagtawa;
ang panahon ng pagluluksa at panahon ng pagdiriwang.
Ang panahon ng pagkakalat ng mga bato at panahon ng pagtitipon sa mga ito;
ang panahon ng pagyayakap at panahon ng paglalayo.
Ang panahon ng paghahanap at panahon ng pagkawala niyon;
ang panahon ng pag-iingat sa isang bagay at panahon ng pagtatapon.
Ang panahon ng pagpunit at panahon ng pagtahi;
ang panahon ng pagtahimik at panahon ng pagsasalita.
Ang panahon ng pagmamahal at panahon ng pagkapoot;
ang panahon ng digmaan at panahon ng kapayapaan.

Ano ang mapapala ng tao sa kanyang ginagawa? Alam ko na ang itinakda ng Diyos sa tao. Iniangkop niya ang lahat ng bagay sa kapanahunan. Ang tao’y binigyan niya ng pagnanasang alamin ang bukas ngunit hindi binigyan ng pagkaunawa sa ginawa ng Diyos mula sa pasimula hanggang sa wakas.

Ang Poon ay papurihan,
siya ang aking sanggalang.

Purihin ang Poon, na aking sanggalang,
matibay kong muog at Tagapagligtas,
at aking tahanang hindi matitinag;
tagapagligtas kong pinagtitiwalaan,

Ano ba ang tao, Panginoon namin?
Siya’y tao lamang na ‘yong pinapansin.
Katulad ay ulap na tangay ng hangin

Lucas 9, 18-22

Ang Mabuting Balita ng Panginoon ayon kay San Lucas

Isang araw, samantalang nananalanging mag-isa si Hesus, lumapit sa kanya ang kanyang mga alagad. Tinanong niya sila, “Sino raw ako ayon sa mga tao?” Sumagot sila, “Ang sabi po ng ilan ay si Juan Bautista kayo; sabi naman ng iba, si Elias kayo, at may nagsasabi pang nabuhay ang isa sa mga propeta noong una.” “Kayo naman, ano ang sabi ninyo?” tanong niya sa kanila. “Ang Mesiyas ng Diyos!” sagot ni Pedro.

Itinagubilin ni Hesus sa kanyang mga alagad na huwag na nilang sasabihin ito kaninuman. At sinabi pa niya sa kanila, “Ang Anak ng Tao’y dapat magbata ng maraming hirap. Itatakwil siya ng matatanda ng bayan, ng mga punong saserdote at ng mga eskriba. Ipapapatay nila siya, ngunit sa ikatlong araw ay muling mabubuhay.”

PANALANGIN NG BAYAN
Ika-25 Linggo sa Karaniwang Panahon
Biyernes

Ang pananampalataya natin kay Jesu-Kristong Anak ng Diyos ang siyang nagtitipon sa atin bilang bahagi ng kanyang sambayanan. Sa kanyang pangalan, dalhin natin ang ating mga intensyon sa Ama.

Panginoon, dinggin Mo ang aming panalangin.
o kaya
Gawin Mong ganap ang aming pananampalataya, O Ama.

Ang Simbahan nawa’y mapanatili ng Santo Papa at ng mga obispo sa pananampalataya ni San Pedro, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Ang ating mga ibinotong opisyal ng gobyerno nawa’y igalang ang karapatan sa buhay ng mga hindi pa ipinanganganak, ng mga matatanda, at ng mga may kapansanan, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Ang mga pari at relihiyoso nawa’y maging tapat sa kanilang tungkulin sa Diyos at sa sambayanang kanilang sinumpaang paglingkuran, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Ang mga maysakit nawa’y mapalakas at magpatuloy sa kanilang pananampalataya, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Yaong mga nauna na sa atin na lisanin ang mundong ito nawa’y magkamit ng kasiyahan ng bagong buhay sa presensya ng Diyos, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Diyos ng habag at awa, sa pamamagitan ng aming Tagapagligtas, pakinggan mo ang panalangin ng iyong Simbahan. Kasama ni San Pedro, nagpahayag kami ng aming pananampalataya kay Kristong iyong Anak, na nabubuhay at naghahari kasama mo magpasawalang hanggan. Amen.

WHEN WAR SPREADS, WHO IS SAFE?

I am deeply concerned about the continuing escalation of the war in the Middle East. What began with American and Israeli attacks on Iran last February has developed into a wider regional conflict, with Iran retaliating against American military installations in several Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. Iran maintains that it has nothing against its Gulf Arab neighbors and that its targets are mainly American military facilities located within their territories. But the consequences of these attacks are being felt far beyond the military bases. Civilian lives, airports, energy facilities and international shipping are being placed at risk.

Saudi Arabia has also been drawn into the conflict, with renewed missile and drone attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement. Just this weekend, attacks were reported near Riyadh’s international airport. The danger is that countries which have sought to avoid direct involvement in the war are nevertheless being drawn into its expanding circle of violence.

My apprehension is not only for the citizens of these Gulf countries, but also for the millions of Filipinos who live and work there. According to Philippine government estimates reported in March 2026, there are approximately 2.35 million Filipinos in the six Gulf states: 975,000 in the UAE, 813,000 in Saudi Arabia, 250,000 in Qatar, 211,000 in Kuwait, 56,000 in Bahrain and 49,000 in Oman. These are our fellow Filipinos who have left their families behind to earn a living abroad. Their safety and welfare must remain a priority for our government.

I am equally troubled by Israel’s continuing involvement in the war against Iran, even as its military operations in Gaza and Lebanon continue. In Gaza, Palestinians are still dying despite the ceasefire, while families displaced by the war are forced to live among the ruins of their destroyed homes. In Lebanon, renewed Israeli strikes and exchanges of fire with Hezbollah threaten to unravel the fragile ceasefire. How much more suffering must ordinary people endure before the parties involved seriously commit themselves to peace?

This situation has become a personal concern for me as well. I am scheduled to travel to Rome for meetings in early October, taking an Emirates flight that will transit through the UAE. During my previous trip to Rome, I deliberately avoided the Gulf region and took a China Airlines flight through Beijing instead. I now find myself wondering whether I should have made the same choice for this forthcoming journey.

There is another dimension to this war that troubles me deeply: the growing use of artificial intelligence in modern warfare. Reports indicate that AI-assisted systems have already been used in military targeting operations against Iran, as well as in Gaza and Lebanon. These technologies can accelerate the identification and selection of targets, compressing decisions that once took hours into mere minutes or seconds.

At the same time, leading AI developers themselves have been warning about the growing difficulty of understanding and controlling the behavior of increasingly powerful AI systems. This raises a disturbing question: Could AI-assisted military decision-making have contributed to the speed and scale of this recent escalation? We do not yet have sufficient evidence to answer that question. But it is a question that urgently deserves investigation, especially as the race toward artificial superintelligence continues.

Are we allowing the development of technologies that can accelerate the machinery of war faster than human wisdom, moral discernment and diplomacy can restrain it?

I pray that the leaders of the nations involved will find the courage to step back from this dangerous escalation and return to the negotiating table. Peace cannot be achieved simply by developing more sophisticated weapons or by threatening one another with greater destruction.

The lives of millions of innocent people, including our own Filipino brothers and sisters working in the Middle East, are at stake. We cannot afford to leave their future to the logic of war, much less to machines that may one day operate beyond our capacity to understand and control them.

Gospel Reading for September 22, 2026 – Luke 8: 19-21

ALL THE TIME

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and they wish to see you.” He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”

There are those who interpret this Gospel to mean that, for Jesus, Mary and his relatives were not important to him. But why would someone who preached about love ALL THE TIME fail to give importance to the woman who bore him in her womb, nursed him, raised him according to Jewish tradition, and, most of all, whose “yes” was so important for the Father’s plan of salvation to come to fruition?

It was precisely for this reason that Jesus pointed out the quality that made Mary truly blessed: she heard the Word of God and acted on it. Even while dying on the Cross, Jesus entrusted Mary to John, symbolically giving her to all of us as our Mother.

Although it is not mentioned in the Bible, Jesus would naturally have gone outside to see Mary and his relatives. After he began his public ministry at the age of thirty, he no longer lived with Mary. Let us not forget that Jesus was born into a family, and being Jesus, his family surely mattered very much to him.

Lord Jesus, help us always to listen to your Word and to act upon it. Amen.

I pray for all
those suffering today,
Lord Jesus;
for those hoping to see
you, to talk to you even for a while
like your mother and brothers
in the gospel;
why did you not go out to see
them right away?
I felt sad.
And disappointed.

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside annd they wish to see you.” He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of G0d and act on it” (Luke 8:19-21).

Luke never bothered
to tell us what they wanted
from you, Lord;
but your reply got me praying
more deeply and these
I realized:
you love us so much
Jesus,
your words always in us,
in our hearts
but many times we do not listen;
Mary and your brothers know
that so well
and they never protested;
in fact,
they affirmed your words
by remaining silent,
trusting you as always;
most of all,
your reply teaches us
your disciples
to widen,
to enlarge
the bounds of our family:
if we choose to listen
and act on the Word of God,
we must at the same time
become a member of the
family of Jesus.

Teach us to be like
that king in the first reading
willing to bow
his will and desires to
God despite his power
and authority;
give me a listening heart,
a will so pliant to your ways
so that I may welcome those
trying to get close to you
Jesus because they hurt;
many times our pains
are so pronounced because
we have no room
for those seeking you,
Jesus.
Amen.
