Nanindigan si Iligan Bishop Elenito Galido na hindi sagot sa pagsugpo ng krimen sa bansa ang pagpapataw ng parusang kamatayan.
Ayon kay Bishop Galido, due process,legal na proseso at hindi pagpatay ang kailangang gawin upang masugpo ang kriminalidad sa lipunan.
Naniniwala ang Obispo na mayroon pang mga tapat na mambabatas na hindi sasang-ayunan sa death penalty sa bansa dahil lalo lamang magpapalubog sa Pilipinas ang pagpatay sa tao.
Binigyan diin ni Bishop Galido na ang lahat ng tao maging kriminal o hindi ay mayroong karapatang pantao.
Sinabi ng Obispo na tanging Diyos lamang ang may karapatan dito.
Iginiit ni Bishop Galido na bilang taga- Simbahan ay dapat nating panindigan ang kahalagahan ng buhay ng tao at pagtutol sa death penalty dahil nagsusulong ito ng kultura ng kamatayan.
“Standing for life as a churchman I am against death penalty because it is promoting the culture of death. It is always due process that will be applied. Due process that is legal and not corrupted. I know we still have some honest out there,”pahayag ni Bishop Galido sa Radio Veritas.
Kauganay nito, inihayag din ni Malaybalay Bishop Jose Cabantan na mas dapat isulong ang restorative justice at hindi ang parusang kamatayan.
“But we are really against death penalty. We are for life from beginning to its natural end. We uphold the dignity of life of all people both for the victims and victimizers. We are for restorative justice giving hope to all including the offenders. The gospel as the fulfillment of the Mosaic law shows us how Jesus treats the adulteress woman, his parable of the weeds and the wheat on respecting and upholding the gift of life to the end. St. John Paul’s Evangelium Vitae has enunciated this well. Pope Francis affirms the teachings of the Church on this matter,”pahayag ni Bishop Cabantan.
Nilinaw ng Obispo na wala sa banal na bibliya na tama ang pagparusa ng kamatayan dahil pagpapahalaga sa dangal ng tao ang itinuturo ng banal na kasulatan.
“Quote yon sa Old Testament eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth which finds fulfillment in the gospel of life and love. We should not read the Scripture on a piecemeal basis or a pick and choose way,” paglilinaw ng Obispo.
Samanatala, mula sa datus ng Amnesty International na umaabot na sa 1,634 ang bilang ng mga nahahatulan ng parusang kamatayan subalit hindi naman bumababa ang bilang ng kriminalidad.
Isang halimbawa ang Pakistan na noong 2014 inalis nila ang death penalty at sinuspende sa loob ng anim na taon.
