Gospel Reading for December 30, 2024 – Luke 2: 36-40
ENTITLED
There was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.
When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.3

Although Mary and Joseph knew that Jesus was the Son of God, they followed all the prescriptions of the Law of the Lord. They regularly went to the temple and made their offering just as the others did.
Some of us, just because we reached a higher level in terms of finances and education, or occupy important positions in our places of work, and even in government, we think that we are ENTITLED to something more than what others are entitled to. We forget that we are all born equally as creatures of God, and we will all die equally, returning to dust. Reaching a higher level than others even comes with a responsibility to be of service to others who have less because all the good things we have achieved, we wouldn’t have achieved without God.
Lord, teach us to be humble!
