FALL INTO PLACE

Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”

And Mary said:

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
and has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever.”

Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home.

————

When we read Mary’s Magnificat, we see how deeply she knew God. It is as if she had carefully treasured in her heart all the wondrous deeds that God had performed throughout the generations up to her own time.

After the angel Gabriel announced that she would become the mother of the long-awaited Saviour, and that Elizabeth, who had long been known to be barren, was with child in her old age, Mary went in haste to the hill country to visit her. Was it because she wanted to make sure that what the angel had told her was true? Most probably not. Mary, who kept and pondered all things in her heart, had such profound faith in God that it would have been unthinkable for her not to believe.

Elizabeth was already in her sixth month of pregnancy when Mary arrived. Mary stayed with her for about three months before returning home. Most likely, she remained until the time Elizabeth gave birth.

Six months later, it would be Mary’s turn to give birth. She could have been anxious about many things: how to tell Joseph, what would happen if people discovered that she had conceived before marriage, and where she would give birth.

Yet Mary entrusted everything to God. God took care of every detail: the angel appeared to Joseph and revealed how Mary had conceived and who the unborn child was; Joseph chose to take her as his wife instead of divorcing her as he had first intended; the Roman census required everyone to return to their ancestral town, so Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem even though she was already in her ninth month of pregnancy; and there, in Bethlehem, she gave birth. This fulfilled the prophecy in the Book of Micah (5:2).

If we could have the kind of faith that Mary had, we too would learn to trust that the events of our lives can FALL INTO PLACE according to God’s loving plan, even when we do not yet understand how he is working.

Mary, our Mother, help us to have a faith like yours, so that we too may share in the blessing and hope promised through your Assumption. Amen.
