Have you ever done something good and ended up being misunderstood? Being misunderstood is one of the most painful of human experiences. Jesus experienced it, as well, because He was human. He fed five thousand people hoping they would discover God in the miracle, but instead they returned only when they needed more food to fill their stomach. The Lord was disappointed because His miracle was taken for the stomach and not for the Spirit.
In the Acts of the Apostles, Stephen was seriously misunderstood when he preached to his fellow Israelites. Instead of gaining their acceptance through preaching, a case was filed against him by the elders.
Though Jesus and Stephen were greatly misunderstood, they handled their situations with forgiveness since they knew they were doing God’s will.
Forgiving and reminding yourself you are doing the will of God, will not lessen the pain of being misunderstood, but will make you a stronger person despite it all.
How do we react to being misunderstood? Do we forgive or do we give our offenders the cold treatment? The experience of being misunderstood is human, the experience of forgiving those who misunderstand us is being a true Christian.
