According to tradition, ๐ฃ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ ๐ฃ๐ถ๐๐ ๐๐ซ, or ๐ฃ๐ถ๐ผ ๐ก๐ผ๐ป๐ผ, spent a long period in prayer in Gaeta, south of Rome, before a painting of the Immaculate Conception preserved in the so-called Chapel of Gold, and that moment of encounter with God convinced him to proclaim the dogma.
In 1854, with the Bull ๐๐ป๐ฒ๐ณ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐๐, Pius IX solemnly proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception: โโฆWe declare, pronounce and define that the doctrine which asserts that the Blessed Virgin Mary, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God, and in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race, was preserved free from every stain of original sin is a doctrine revealed by God and, for this reason, must be firmly and constantly believed by all the faithful.โ
The apparitions at Lourdes in 1858, where Our Lady revealed her identity to Bernadette with the words, โI am the Immaculate Conception,โ is believed to confirm the teaching of this doctrine.
Today, February 7, we commemorate this holy pope and his timeless legacy, and on Saturday, February 11, the apparitions of the Immaculate Virgin Mary at Lourdes.
