ONLY THE HEART
Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
And his parents went every year to Jerusalem, at the solemn day of the pasch, And when he was twelve years old, they going up into Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast, And having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not. And thinking that he was in the company, they came a day’s journey, and sought him among their kinsfolks and acquaintance. And not finding him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking him.
And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his wisdom and his answers. And seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us? behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
And he said to them: How is it that you sought me? did you not know, that I must be about my father’s business? And they understood not the word that he spoke unto them. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart.

Today, as we celebrate the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we will realize from the gospel reading why Mary was chosen to be the Mother of Jesus, Son of God. The Anunciation, the Nativity of Jesus, the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, and now finding him in the temple with the learned, hearing them and asking questions, were probably too much for her to understand. Mary did not rebel against not being able to understand these things because she knew that God had a hand in all these, and God’s Will is most important in life if we are to be happy and at peace, so she kept all these things in her heart.
Let us learn from Mary – ONLY THE HEART CAN CONTAIN THE THINGS THAT ARE GOD’S.
In life, there will be many occurences that we will not be able to understand well even if we try hard to understand. This is where Faith begins. This is when we leave things up to God and for a time, keep them in our hearts. And like Mary, after Jesus went back to the Father, everything surely became clear to her. It will also be for us.
Mary, Immaculate Mother, help us make our hearts like unto thine!
