UNANG PAGBASA
Deuteronomio 8, 2-3. 14b-16a

Pagbasa mula sa aklat ng Deuteronomio

Sinabi ni Moises sa mga tao: “Alalahanin ninyo kung paano niya kayo pinatnubayan sa ilang sa loob ng apatnapung taon upang matuto kayong magpakumbaba. Sinubok niya kayo kung susundin ninyo siya. Tinuruan nga kayong magpakumbaba; ginutom niya kayo bago binigyan ng manna, isang pagkaing hindi ninyo kilala ni ng inyong mga ninuno. Ginawa niya ito upang ipakilala sa inyo na ang tao’y hindi lamang nabubuhay sa pagkain kundi sa salita rin naman ng Panginoon.

“Huwag ninyong kalilimutan ang Panginoon na nagpalaya sa inyo mula sa pagkaalipin ng bansang Egipto. Siya ang pumatnubay sa inyo sa inyong paglalakbay sa malawak at nakatatakot na ilang na puno ng makamandag na mga ahas at alakdan. Nang wala kayong mainom, nagpabukal siya ng tubig mula sa isang malaking bato. Kayo’y pinakain niya roon ng manna, isang pagkaing di ninyo kilala.”

Purihin mo, Jerusalem,
ang Panginoong butihin.

o kaya: Aleluya.

Purihin mo, Jerusalem, purihin ang Panginoon,
purihin mo ang iyong Diyos, kayong mga taga-Sion.
Yaong mga pintuan mo ay siya ang nag-iingat,
ang lahat ng iyong lingkod ay siya ang nagbabasbas.

Ginagawang matahimik yaong mga hangganan mo,
bibigyan kang kasiyahan sa kaloob niyang trigo.

Mga kapatid, hindi ba’t ang pag-inom natin sa kalis ng pagpapala na ating ipinagpapasalamat ay pakikibahagi sa dugo ni Kristo? At ang pagkain natin ng tinapay na ating pinaghahati-hati ay pakikibahagi naman sa kanyang katawan? Kaya nga, yamang isa lamang ang tinapay, tayo’y iisang katawan bagamat marami, sapagkat nakikibahagi tayo sa iisang tinapay.

AWIT TUNGKOL SA MABUTING BALITA

Purihin mo, Lungsod ng D’yos,
ang Pastol na Manunubos,
ang Panginoong si Hesus.

Sa abot ng kakayanan
ng lahat ng kanyang hirang,
siya’y dapat papurihan.

Ang sarili niya’y handog
upang lahat ay matubos
at mapalakas nang lubos.

Kasalo’y mga alagad
ng Panginoong Mesiyas
na hai’y buhay sa lahat.

Siya’y dapat na handugan
ng papuri at parangal
ng lahat ng kanyang hirang.

Ngayo’y ating gunitain
ang Huling Hapunang bilin
ng Panginoon sa atin.

Dito naganap ang tipan
na bago at walang hanggan
sa kaligtasan ng tanan.

Ang kasunduang matanda
humantong sa pasinaya
ng hain n’yang inihanda.

Tanang ginanap ni Hesus
ay habilin niyang utos
na ipagdiwang nang lubos.

Ang handog niyang pagkain
at alay niyang inumi’y
laman niya’t dugong hain.

Kanyang turong iniaral
na ang alak at tinapay
ay dugo niya’t katawan.

Manalig tayong matapat
kahit hindi namamalas
ang pagbabagong naganap.

Pagkain ay pinalitan
ni Kristo ng kanyang laman
upang tayo’y makinabang.

Napalitan ang inumin
sa dugo na inihain
ni Hesus para sa atin.

Ating pinagsasaluha’y
si Hesus na Poong mahal,
walang bawas, walang kulang.

Kahit marami o isa
ang tumatanggap sa kanya’y
laging sapat, laging kasya.

Ang may sala’y lapastangan
ngunit ang butihi’y banal
pagdulog sa pakinabang.

Masuwayi’y magdurusa,
mabubuhay ang magtika
nang si Kristo’y matanggap n’ya.

Hinati-hating tinapay
para sa nakikinabang
ay laman ni Kristong buhay
na sa ati’y kanyang alay.

Sa lahat ng tumatanggap
paghahati’y ginaganap
ngunit buo, walang bawas
ang Katawan ng Mesiyas.

Pagkaing mula sa langit
ngayo’y hain sa daigdig.
Handog na kaibig-ibig
kailanma’y di masasaid.

Paghahai’y inilahad
nang ialay si Isaac,
ang korderong nagliligtas,
ang manna ng nagsilikas.

Pastol naming mapagmahal,
kami’y iyong kaawaan,
gawing dapat makinabang
sa pagkaing iyong alay
hanggang langit ay makamtan.

Magagawa mo ang lahat
upang tanan ay maligtas,
akayin mo sa ‘yong hapag
lahat kaming ‘yong alagad
sa buhay mong walang wakas.

MABUTING BALITA
Juan 6, 51-58

Ang Mabuting Balita ng Panginoon ayon kay San Juan

Noong panahong iyon, sinabi ni Hesus sa mga tao: “Ako ang pagkaing nagbibigay-buhay na bumaba mula sa langit. Mabubuhay magpakailanman ang sinumang kumain nito. At ang pagkaing ibibigay ko sa ikabubuhay ng sanlibutan ay ang aking laman.”

Dahil dito’y nagtalu-talo ang mga Judio. “Paanong maibibigay sa atin ng taong ito ang kanyang laman upang kanin natin?” tanong nila. Kaya’t sinabi ni Hesus, “Tandaan ninyo: malibang kanin ninyo ang laman ng Anak ng Tao at inumin ang kanyang dugo, hindi kayo magkakaroon ng buhay. Ang kumakain ng aking laman at umiinom ng aking dugo ay may buhay na walang hanggan, at muli ko siyang bubuhayin sa huling araw. Sapagkat ang aking laman ay tunay na pagkain, at ang aking dugo, tunay na inumin. Ang kumakain ng aking laman at umiinom ng aking dugo ay nananahan sa akin, at ako sa kanya. Buhay ang Amang nagsugo sa akin, at ako’y nabubuhay dahil sa kanya. Gayun din naman, ang sinumang kumain sa akin ay mabubuhay dahil sa akin. Ito ang pagkaing bumaba mula sa langit; ang kumakain nito’y mabubuhay magpakailanman. Hindi ito katulad ng kinain ng inyong mga magulang sa ilang; namatay sila bagamat kumain niyon.”

WHEN WAR SPREADS, WHO IS SAFE?

I am deeply concerned about the continuing escalation of the war in the Middle East. What began with American and Israeli attacks on Iran last February has developed into a wider regional conflict, with Iran retaliating against American military installations in several Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. Iran maintains that it has nothing against its Gulf Arab neighbors and that its targets are mainly American military facilities located within their territories. But the consequences of these attacks are being felt far beyond the military bases. Civilian lives, airports, energy facilities and international shipping are being placed at risk.

Saudi Arabia has also been drawn into the conflict, with renewed missile and drone attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement. Just this weekend, attacks were reported near Riyadh’s international airport. The danger is that countries which have sought to avoid direct involvement in the war are nevertheless being drawn into its expanding circle of violence.

My apprehension is not only for the citizens of these Gulf countries, but also for the millions of Filipinos who live and work there. According to Philippine government estimates reported in March 2026, there are approximately 2.35 million Filipinos in the six Gulf states: 975,000 in the UAE, 813,000 in Saudi Arabia, 250,000 in Qatar, 211,000 in Kuwait, 56,000 in Bahrain and 49,000 in Oman. These are our fellow Filipinos who have left their families behind to earn a living abroad. Their safety and welfare must remain a priority for our government.

I am equally troubled by Israel’s continuing involvement in the war against Iran, even as its military operations in Gaza and Lebanon continue. In Gaza, Palestinians are still dying despite the ceasefire, while families displaced by the war are forced to live among the ruins of their destroyed homes. In Lebanon, renewed Israeli strikes and exchanges of fire with Hezbollah threaten to unravel the fragile ceasefire. How much more suffering must ordinary people endure before the parties involved seriously commit themselves to peace?

This situation has become a personal concern for me as well. I am scheduled to travel to Rome for meetings in early October, taking an Emirates flight that will transit through the UAE. During my previous trip to Rome, I deliberately avoided the Gulf region and took a China Airlines flight through Beijing instead. I now find myself wondering whether I should have made the same choice for this forthcoming journey.

There is another dimension to this war that troubles me deeply: the growing use of artificial intelligence in modern warfare. Reports indicate that AI-assisted systems have already been used in military targeting operations against Iran, as well as in Gaza and Lebanon. These technologies can accelerate the identification and selection of targets, compressing decisions that once took hours into mere minutes or seconds.

At the same time, leading AI developers themselves have been warning about the growing difficulty of understanding and controlling the behavior of increasingly powerful AI systems. This raises a disturbing question: Could AI-assisted military decision-making have contributed to the speed and scale of this recent escalation? We do not yet have sufficient evidence to answer that question. But it is a question that urgently deserves investigation, especially as the race toward artificial superintelligence continues.

Are we allowing the development of technologies that can accelerate the machinery of war faster than human wisdom, moral discernment and diplomacy can restrain it?

I pray that the leaders of the nations involved will find the courage to step back from this dangerous escalation and return to the negotiating table. Peace cannot be achieved simply by developing more sophisticated weapons or by threatening one another with greater destruction.

The lives of millions of innocent people, including our own Filipino brothers and sisters working in the Middle East, are at stake. We cannot afford to leave their future to the logic of war, much less to machines that may one day operate beyond our capacity to understand and control them.

Gospel Reading for September 22, 2026 – Luke 8: 19-21

ALL THE TIME

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and they wish to see you.” He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”

There are those who interpret this Gospel to mean that, for Jesus, Mary and his relatives were not important to him. But why would someone who preached about love ALL THE TIME fail to give importance to the woman who bore him in her womb, nursed him, raised him according to Jewish tradition, and, most of all, whose “yes” was so important for the Father’s plan of salvation to come to fruition?

It was precisely for this reason that Jesus pointed out the quality that made Mary truly blessed: she heard the Word of God and acted on it. Even while dying on the Cross, Jesus entrusted Mary to John, symbolically giving her to all of us as our Mother.

Although it is not mentioned in the Bible, Jesus would naturally have gone outside to see Mary and his relatives. After he began his public ministry at the age of thirty, he no longer lived with Mary. Let us not forget that Jesus was born into a family, and being Jesus, his family surely mattered very much to him.

Lord Jesus, help us always to listen to your Word and to act upon it. Amen.

those suffering today,
Lord Jesus;
for those hoping to see
you, to talk to you even for a while
like your mother and brothers
in the gospel;
why did you not go out to see
them right away?
I felt sad.
And disappointed.

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside annd they wish to see you.” He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of G0d and act on it” (Luke 8:19-21).

Luke never bothered
to tell us what they wanted
from you, Lord;
but your reply got me praying
more deeply and these
I realized:
you love us so much
Jesus,
your words always in us,
in our hearts
but many times we do not listen;
Mary and your brothers know
that so well
and they never protested;
in fact,
they affirmed your words
by remaining silent,
trusting you as always;
most of all,
your reply teaches us
your disciples
to widen,
to enlarge
the bounds of our family:
if we choose to listen
and act on the Word of God,
we must at the same time
become a member of the
family of Jesus.
Teach us to be like
that king in the first reading
willing to bow
his will and desires to
God despite his power
and authority;
give me a listening heart,
a will so pliant to your ways
so that I may welcome those
trying to get close to you
Jesus because they hurt;
many times our pains
are so pronounced because
we have no room
for those seeking you,
Jesus.
