Pinuri ng Diocese of Borongan at Philippine Misereor Partnership Incorporated ang pagpapahinto ng lokal napamahalaan ng Eastern Samar sa operasyon ng tatlong mining companies sa Manicani at Homonhon islands.
Iginiit ni Rev. Father Juderick Calumpiano – Social Action Center Director ng Diocese of Borongan ang labis at matindi na ang pinsalang idinulot ng operasyon ng Hinatuan Mining Corporation, Cambayas Mining at Emir Mining sa isla, na nagdulot rin ng hidwaan sa pagitan ng mga lokal na mamamayan.
“The communities in these islands are torn when it should not be a question of who wants mining and who does not. It is putting first the interest and the protection of the islanders and the home islands from further destruction and division. Even our Pope is calling for the radical paradigm shift among mining companies whose interests are different from the communities affected by their operation,”pahayag ni Father Calumpiano sa Radio Veritas
Pinasalamatan naman ng Philippine Misereor Partnership Incorporated ang pansamantalang pagpapatigil sa mga minahan dahil tumataas na ang tensyon sa isla.
“Since the attempts of HMC to dock barges and start loading operations in September 2014, the situation in Manicani changed from peaceful to volatile. It could get worse anytime and it is a good thing that provincial leadership has the courage to intervene and simmer the situation down.” Pahayag ni Yolly Esguerra, National Coordinator ng PMPI.
Ipinag-utos ni Eastern Samar Governor Conrado Nicart ang operasyon ng tatlong minahan sa Manicani at Homonhon Islands upang maiwasan ang naganap na karahasan noong May 2001.
Sa liham ni Governor Nicart sa Cambayas Mining at Emir Corporation, binigyang diin nito ang Provincial Ordinance No. 8, Series of 2003 na nagpapataw ng indefinite moratorium sa Large Scale Mining Activities sa buong probinsya ng Eastern Samar.
Ito rin ang ordinansang ipinatutupad ng iba’t-ibang Local Government Unit sa bansa laban sa mga mining operations, gayunman sa kabila nito mayroon paring 47 mining sites sa Pilipinas.
Kaugnay dito noong Septyembre 2014, batay sa Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) halos kalahati ng mga lalawigan sa ating bansa ay may hindi bababa sa isang LGU na may anti-mining legislations o resolutions.
Ilan na rito ang anti-mining laws sa South Cotabato, Romblon, Marinduque, Bohol, Cagayan de Oro City, at Davao City.
