Gospel Reading for September 10, 2024 – Luke 6: 12-19

MORE WORTHY

Jesus departed to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God. When day came, he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named Apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called a Zealot, and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

And he came down with them and stood on a stretch of level ground. A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and even those who were tormented by unclean spirits were cured. Everyone in the crowd sought to touch him because power came forth from him and healed them all.

Why were these 12 chosen by Jesus? Were they MORE WORTHY to be with the Saviour of the world? Perhaps, if the criteria for being worthy is up to us, we may find them unworthy. Who should be with the Son of God? Should they not come from the elite? from the upper social class? from the educated and learned?

Well, when God chooses us for a mission, it is not because we are MORE WORTHY than others, but because he chooses TO GIVE US WORTH. We all are his children. All of us have what it takes to shine in his image and likeness in this world. Hence, it is of utmost importance for us to discern where and for what, we are sent. Just as Jesus spent the night in prayer to God before choosing the people he will be with in his Ministry, we need to spend a lot of time in prayer to God, so we may know the right path and remain strong in the mission.

Lord, help us to go out of ourselves so we may give ourselves to the betterment of this world!
