𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 | 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟐, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑

𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 marks the beginning of Holy Week, or the week leading up to Easter Sunday. Most of us know the importance of Easter as one of the most foundational days of our faith when Christ victoriously rose from the grave defeating sin and death, but what is the significance of Palm Sunday and how can we effectively communicate it to the girls in our sphere of influence? I’d like to break down three features of the Palm Sunday story found in Matthew 21:1-11 for you to easily share with your girls as well: the donkey, the crowds, and the palm branches.

• A 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐲 marks the beginning of the account of Jesus’s Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem as we see Jesus instruct His disciples to find a donkey for Him to enter the city on. (Matt. 21:1 – 7). I can’t help but recall the last time a donkey was chosen as a vessel—when Mary rode on the back of a donkey carrying baby Jesus in her womb. This time we see Jesus Himself entering into the city of Jerusalem on a humble donkey. A seemingly small detail that takes up the first seven verses actually serves to beautifully tie the Old Testament into the New Testament. Matthew 21:5 reveals this as a fulfillment of a prophecy found in Zechariah 9:9. This connection to the Old Testament is just another example of how the whole Bible points to Jesus; He is on every page.

• The 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐝 is another key detail to look closer at in discussing Palm Sunday with your girls. Jesus was leading a crowd of His followers and disciples, many who had possibly been following Him since He began His earthly ministry in Galilee. These people had seen Jesus preform many miracles and wondrous acts firsthand. They were some of the first to begin to see Jesus for who He really is, the Son of God (Mark 10:47).

• The 𝐩𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐝 lay on the road before Jesus are signs of an overflow of joyous praise. The people shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” Hosanna means “O save us” in Hebrew and I loved discovering this detail. It gives so much more insight to the meaning of this event. Like many of us before we came to know Jesus as our Savior, this crowd does not know just how desperately they need Jesus to save them (Rom. 3:10 – 12).

MODERN-DAY PHARISEES

At that time: So many people were crowding together that they were trampling one another underfoot. Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples, “Beware of the leaven–that is, the hypocrisy–of the Pharisees. “There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops. I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one. Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God. Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.”

Perhaps there are very few people in the world who would not fear murderers or members of groups operating in the underworld or engaged in criminal activities. For Jesus, however, this fear is secondary to the fear of those who can lead us astray—those who have managed to convince others that what has always been morally right is wrong, and what is wrong is now morally right.

Jesus is not merely speaking about the Pharisees. We have MODERN-DAY PHARISEES who manipulate the Word of God to serve their personal interests or promote their advocacies that run counter to the teachings of Jesus and Sacred Scripture.

If we are to be true Christians who wish to enjoy eternal life with God someday, we have to be wary of these people. They are the ones we must avoid because, although they cannot kill us physically, they can kill us spiritually.

Lord Jesus, help us to always seek the truth in Sacred Scripture and in the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament.

What's happening in the world,
Lord where everyone seems to thrive 
in chaos?
Trash talks like cussings,
making fun of other people's
disabilities, smart shaming and
body shaming are so glorified and
imitated especially in social media;
many have no more sense of shame at all,
stretching their rights without any regard
for their responsibilities nor rights of others
that we are like in that gospel scene today:

At that time, so many people were crowding together that they were trampling one another underfoot. Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples, “Beware of the leaven – that is, hypocrisy – of the Pharisees (Luke 12:1).

Are we not like those
people crowding together,
already trampling just to hear you
speak, Jesus?

Give us the wisdom,
awaken us from our glorification of
everything that is crass and low,
giving only emphasis on the body
forgetting about the soul,
its dignity and value
along with virtues:
"I tell you,
 my friends,
do not be afraid of those
who kill the body
but after that can do no more"
(Luke 12:4).

Let us see St. Paul's
alternative vision for the world
in which God's plan is to restore
all things in you, Christ;
let us see more the love and 
mercy you have lavished upon us
when you suffered and died 
on the Cross to save us,
rising from the dead on the third day
to reconcile us to the Father 
and with everyone;
how consoling that we are
not our own,
that despite the chaos 
and darkness all over us these days,
"In Christ we were also chosen,
destined in accord with purpose of
the one who accomplishes all things
according to the intention of his will...
were sealed with the Holy Spirit"
(Ephesians 1:11, 13).

How lovely are
these words, Lord!
May we be like St. Paul
in proclaiming to this sick and dark world
that there is an alternative, 
better vision of the world 
from the Father
in Christ Jesus.
Give us the courage to work on this,
to cooperate with your grace in
showing the world 
life is so beautiful!
Amen.

TRULY UNDERSTAND

The Lord said: “Woe to you who build the memorials of the prophets whom your fathers killed. Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the building. Therefore, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and Apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute’ in order that this generation might be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood! Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.” When Jesus left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward him and to interrogate him about many things, for they were plotting to catch him at something he might say.

“Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.”

The scholars of the law lacked the knowledge needed to TRULY UNDERSTAND the Laws of God, and worse, they prevented others from gaining that knowledge. Jesus’ teachings provided a simple yet profound understanding of the Laws of God, and yet, they refused to accept his teachings. Worse still, they refused to accept him and plotted to destroy him.

It is very dangerous to interpret the Laws of God and the Word of God according to our own understanding. We need enlightenment from the Holy Spirit and openness to the teachings of the Church. We cannot use our own interpretations, especially to satisfy or justify our own needs. We shall be accountable to the One who gave the Laws and the One who speaks the Word.

Lord Jesus, may we always be aware that we are but instruments and not interpreters of your Laws and your Word. Amen.
