The WORD. The TRUTH.

Listening to the gospel account, we can actually give it this title: “The Cutter is Cut, The Questioner is Questioned.”

Questions are a vital part of our day-to-day life. But we have so many reasons for asking questions. Some people ask questions in order to be informed. On the other hand, some people ask questions in order to harass. Some people ask questions in order to show that they are more intelligent than others. Some people ask questions in order to learn. Some people ask questions in order to express suspicion. Some people ask questions in order to build up and stimulate. Some people ask questions in order to destroy.

We can question authority. We can question people in power. Now, the question to ask ourselves is: “What is our motivation for asking?” If we are to be honest with ourselves, we will realize that many of our questions are born out of the intention to embarrass, to humiliate, to prove ourselves better than the others. We must realize that we are not very far from the way of questioning of the Scribes and Pharisees. Their questions were motivated not by their eagerness to gather information but were more intended to harass.

Today, it is good to ask ourselves: Do we ask because we do not know or do we ask because we want other people to know that we know? Do we ask because we want to learn, or do we ask because we want to embarrass other people? Do We ask because we want to build up and stimulate or do we ask because we want to destroy?
