Gospel Reading for May 27, 2025 – John 16: 5-11
THAT PUSH
Jesus said to his disciples: “Now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts. But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation: sin, because they do not believe in me; righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.”

Despedidas are often painful, especially if the person is leaving us for good. Although the internet provides the means to keep in touch, particularly through video calls, there is still the element of losing, as if a part of us has become void. This is because in reality, the person can no longer be physically present among us. We can no longer enjoy his/her company as we used to. This is really about ourselves.
With Jesus, it was different. Although the apostles felt grief in their hearts, unless Jesus leaves, the Holy Spirit will not come. Jesus’ leaving would be to their advantage. They needed the Holy Spirit who will give them THAT PUSH they needed to start their mission.
Let us never forget that Jesus continues to be present among us through the Holy Spirit!
Come Holy Spirit, we need you to always give us THAT PUSH to follow Jesus faithfully!
