UNANG PAGBASA
Hebreo 8, 6-13

Pagbasa mula sa sulat sa mga Hebreo

Mga kapatid, ang paglilingkod na ipinagkaloob kay Hesus ay higit na dakila kaysa ipinagkaloob sa kanila, yamang siya’y tagapamagitan ng isang tipang higit na mabuti, sapagkat nasasalig ito sa lalong mahahalagang bagay na ipinangako.

Kung walang kakulangan ang unang tipan, hindi na sana nangailangan ng pangalawa. Ngunit nakita ng Diyos ang pagkukulang ng kanyang bayan, kaya’t sinabi niya,

“Darating ang mga araw,
na ako’y makikipagtipan nang panibago sa bayang Israel
at sa angkan ng Juda,
Hindi tulad ng pakikipagtipan ko sa kanilang mga ninuno,
nang akayin ko sila mula sa Egipto.
Hindi sila naging tapat sa pakikipagtipan sa akin,
kaya’t sila’y pinabayaan ko.
Ito ang aking magiging tipan sa bayang Israel,
pagdating ng mga araw na iyon:
Itatanim ko sa kanilang isip ang aking mga utos,
at iuukit ko ang mga ito sa kanilang puso.
Ako ang magiging Diyos nila,
at sila nama’y magiging bayan ko.
Hindi na kakailanganing ituro ninuman sa kanyang kababayan,
O sabihin sa kanyang kapatid,
‘Kilalanin mo ang Panginoon.’
sapagkat Ako’y kikilalanin nilang lahat,
mula sa pinakaaba hanggang sa pinakadakila.
Sapagkat ipapatawad ko sa kanila ang kanilang mga kasalanan,
at lilimutin ko na ang kanilang mga kasamaan.”

Nang sabihin ng Diyos ang tungkol sa bagong tipan, pinawalan niya ng bisa ang una. At anumang nawawalan ng bisa at naluluma ay malapit nang mawala.

Pag-ibig at pagtatapat
ay magkakadaup-palad.

Panginoong Diyos, ipakita mo na ang pag-ibig mong wagas.
Kami ay lingapin at sa kahirapan ay iyong iligtas.
Ang nagpaparangal sa pangalan niya’y kanyang ililigtas,
sa ating lupain ay mananatili ang kanyang paglingap.

Pag-ibig at pagtatapat
ay magkakadaup-palad.

Ang pagtatapatan at pag-iibiga’y magdadaup-palad,
ang kapayapaan at ang katwira’y magsasamang ganap.
Sa balat ng lupa’y pawang maghahari yaong pagtatapat,

ay magkakadaup-palad.

Gagawing maunlad ng Panginoong Diyos itong ating buhay,
ang mga halaman sa ating lupai’y bubungang mainam;
sa harapan niya yaong maghahari’y pawang katarungan,
magiging payapa’t susunod ang madla sa kanyang daan.

Ang Mabuting Balita ng Panginoon ayon kay San Marcos

Noong panahong iyon, umahon si Hesus sa kaburulan, kasama ang kanyang mga pinili. Humirang siya ng labindalawa na tinawag niyang mga apostol upang maging kasa-kasama niya, suguing mangaral, at bigyan ng kapangyarihang magpalayas ng mga demonyo. Ito ang labindalawang hinirang niya: si Simon na tinagurian niya ng Pedro; si Santiago at si Juan, na mga anak ni Zebedeo, sila’y tinagurian niyang Boanerges, na ibig sabihi’y mapupusok; sina Andres, Felipe, Bartolome, Mateo, Tomas, Santiago na anak ni Alfeo, at Tadeo; si Simon na makabayan, at si Judas Iscariote na siyang nagkanulo sa kanya.

PANALANGIN NG BAYAN

Bilang Banal na Bayan na tinawag ng Diyos sa iba’t ibang pamamaraan upang ipalaganap ang Mabuting Balita ng kanyang Paghahari, iluhog natin ang ating mga pangangailangan sa Ama na nag-aaruga sa atin.

Panginoon, dinggin Mo ang aming panalangin.
o kaya
Diyos na tumawag sa amin,
ibahagi Mo sa amin ang Iyong kapangyarihan.

Ang mga tinawag sa Simbahan na mamuno sa Bayan ng Diyos nawa’y magkaroon ng tapang na ipalaganap ang Ebanghelyo ni Jesu-Kristo saanmang sulok ng mundo, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Ang mga naghahanap sa Diyos nawa’y matagpuan nila ang kaliwanagan at buong kaloobang tumugon sa paanyaya ng Diyos na makasama niya, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Ang mga kabataan nawa’y marinig at makilala nila ang tinig ni Kristo na tumatawag sa kanila sa buhay na paglilingkod, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Ang mga maysakit nawa’y tumanggap ng kasiyahan at lakas mula sa mga nag-aaruga sa kanila, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Ang ating mga mahal na yumao nawa’y makapahinga sa kapayapaan ni Kristo sa kanyang Kaharian, manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Diyos Ama sa Langit, tinawag mo kami mula sa mga ordinaryong pagkakataon sa aming buhay; hayaan mo na bigyan kami ng iyong Espiritu ng lakas na bigkasin: “Panginoon, narito ako upang sundin ang kalooban mo.” Hinihiling namin ito sa pamamagitan ni Kristong aming Panginoon. Amen.

STRONG WORDS FROM THE SC TO CONGRESS: “GRAVE ABUSE OF DISCRETION”

Thirty-nine years. That is how long Congress has failed to enact the law required by the 1987 Constitution to prohibit political dynasties.

Today the Supreme Court finally said: enough.

In a unanimous decision, the Court declared that Congress has a mandatory constitutional duty to enact an anti-political dynasty law, and that its prolonged failure to do so constitutes “grave abuse of discretion” and a continuing violation of its constitutional duty. The Court directed Congress to act “with utmost urgency” and enact the law “at the earliest opportunity.”

Those are exceptionally strong words.
Article II, Section 26 of our Constitution declares: “The State shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service, and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law.”

For almost four decades, the constitutional command remained largely unrealized because Congress itself was entrusted with defining what constitutes a political dynasty. The Court noted that dynasties have meanwhile remained widespread, extending even into the party-list system.

Perhaps this ruling raises a question larger than political dynasties themselves: What happens when those entrusted with making the law have a personal interest in not making it?

This is precisely why constitutional institutions exist—to place limits on power, including the power of those who make our laws.

Thirty-nine years is long enough.
Congress, the Supreme Court has spoken. Now enact the law.

THE NEW ARMS RACE: AI RACE

President Donald Trump has reportedly dismissed the growing warnings about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence as a “hoax.” His reason is revealing: America must stay ahead because, as he puts it, “whoever wins AI wins.”

Perhaps that statement itself should set alarm bells ringing.

We have heard this logic before. During the Cold War, one superpower could not stop developing more powerful weapons because the other might get ahead. Each side’s fear became the justification for the other’s escalation. And humanity found itself trapped in an arms race capable of destroying the very civilization it claimed to defend.

The Church did not remain silent.

In 1963, shortly after the Cuban Missile Crisis brought humanity frighteningly close to nuclear catastrophe, Pope St. John XXIII issued Pacem in Terris. He called explicitly for “a cessation to the arms race,” for the reduction of armaments, the banning of nuclear weapons, and agreements accompanied by effective systems of mutual control.

Paul VI carried that appeal to the United Nations. John Paul II repeatedly called for an end to the nuclear arms race. Benedict XVI and Francis continued the Church’s advocacy for disarmament, with Francis eventually declaring even the possession of nuclear weapons morally unacceptable.

Today we may be facing a new arms race—the AI race.

It is already inseparable from modern warfare. Artificial intelligence is being integrated into surveillance, targeting, autonomous weapons, cyberwarfare and military decision-making. But an even more fundamental race is taking place among nations and corporations: the race toward increasingly powerful AI—and ultimately toward a possible superintelligence.

The logic sounds disturbingly familiar.

America cannot slow down because China might get ahead.

China cannot slow down because America might get ahead.

One AI company cannot slow down because its competitors might get ahead.

And so nobody can afford to be prudent.

This is why I find it significant that some of the very people building the world’s most powerful AI systems are themselves beginning to call for restraint, regulation, independent monitoring and international cooperation. They are warning us that capabilities are advancing faster than our capacity to understand and control them.

The issue is not whether AI is good or evil. AI has enormous potential for good. The deeper question is whether we are racing toward a point at which human intelligence may no longer be able to hold the reins.

Pope Leo XIV has already given the Church a powerful expression for this in Magnifica Humanitas: we must “disarm AI.”

Perhaps the time has come to translate that principle into a more urgent global appeal—calling together governments, AI developers, scientists, ethicists and religious leaders to consider internationally agreed red lines on the development of superintelligence: reciprocal commitments, independent monitoring, verification and effective safeguards before capabilities are developed that humanity may no longer be able to control.

The Church helped humanity find its moral voice during the nuclear arms race. Perhaps she is being called to exercise that prophetic role again.

Because the real question is not: Who will win the AI race? The question is: What if humanity loses it?

LOVE and COMPASSION

A certain Pharisee invited Jesus to dine with him, and he entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table. Now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee. Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.”

Jesus said to him in reply, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said.

“Two people were in debt to a certain creditor; one owed five hundred days’ wages and the other owed fifty. Since they were unable to repay the debt, he forgave it for both. Which of them will love him more?” Simon said in reply, “The one, I suppose, whose larger debt was forgiven.” He said to him, “You have judged rightly.”

Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet, but she has bathed them with her tears
and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but she has not ceased kissing my feet since the time I entered. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with ointment. So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; hence, she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.” He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven. The others at table said to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” But he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

The Pharisees seemed to have a lot of time keeping track of what people were doing and putting labels on them. They were particularly fond of labeling people as “sinners.”

The word Pharisee comes from the Hebrew word prushim, which means “separated ones.” They thought of themselves as HOLY simply because they observed practices that kept them from ritual impurity. This explains why Jesus was often angry with them, especially because of their hypocrisy. Their judgmental attitude discouraged the so-called “sinners” from having a change of heart. More often than not, people do not change because of the labels placed on them. It is LOVE and COMPASSION that can change hearts. That is the way of Jesus.

The woman in the Gospel showed genuine repentance, and it touched Jesus’ heart and led Him to forgive her.

As for us, it is only when we recognize and admit that we too are sinners, and sincerely repent of our sins, that we receive God’s forgiveness.

Lord Jesus, may we always be humble enough to admit that we too sin against God and are also in need of Your forgiveness. Amen
