Gospel Reading for July 27, 2026 – Matthew 13: 31-35
SINCE THE BEGINNING
Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds. “The Kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.’” He spoke to them another parable. “The Kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.” All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke to them only in parables, to fulfill what had been said through the prophet: I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world.

In short, the Kingdom of heaven is certain to grow, even if it begins as small as a mustard seed. Jesus’ words about the Kingdom of heaven give us hope that, despite the evil around us, every good thing we do is never lost. The Kingdom of heaven will never cease, for it has existed SINCE THE BEGINNING—the eternal dwelling place of God.
Let us not waste the time God has given us on things that have no lasting value in heaven. Our journey begins here on earth, but the ultimate goal of every Christian is to reach heaven.
Lord Jesus, help us to bring a foretaste of heaven to earth by living according to your will. Amen.

How lovely and so practical,
O God,
is your portrayal to us today
of your intimacy with us
like a "linen loincloth":
the most simple and
ordinary part of our clothing
we take for granted
yet so important and crucial
because it is so close,
so intimate to our skin,
to our private parts;
an intimacy we take
for granted because
it is something hidden,
too personal.
But,
do we really care at all?
For, as close as the loincloth clings to a man’s loins, so had I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, says the Lord; to be my people, my renown, my praise, my beauty. But they did not listen (Jeremiah 13:11).
Like that linen loincloth
you asked Jeremiah to hide
and retrieve later from a river,
ending up as "rotted, good for nothing",
we have betrayed you Lord,
we have abandoned you
to follow our many idols
and false gods by keeping
you in name,
in rituals and rites
yet compromising your
laws and teachings
with the ways of the world;
we pretend to be close
and intimate with you,
Lord while choosing to be
fence-sitters in situations
demanding we make a stand
for you,
for what is true,
for what is good.
True intimacy with you,
O God is found
in the most private
moments when we
choose you,
when we abide in you,
when we uphold your teachings
and live in your ways
of justice and love,
kindness and mercy
especially with those
closest to us;
may we realize,
O Lord,
that to whom we are
most intimate
and closest in
following and imitating
is found our Lord and God.
Or sadly,
our mammon too
for where our treasure is,
there our heart is.
Amen.

Mga Kapanalig, sa pagtatapos ng pagdinig ng impeachment court sa Article 4 na may kaugnayan sa pagbabanta umano ni Vice President Sara Duterte sa búhay ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos, Jr, may pakiusap si Senator-Judge Robin Padilla: “Sana hindi one-sided ang ating prosecution.”
Nag-ugat ang apelang ito ng senador sa pagkuha daw ng prosekusyon ng mga testigong may kinakaharap na kaso at kuwestiyonableng kredibilidad. Nang araw na iyon, nakaupo sa witness stand si NBI Director Melvin Matibag, kasunod nina NBI Senior Agent Mark Calilung at NBI Regional Director Jeremy Lotoc na tumestigo noong mga nakalipas na linggo. Sabi ng senador, may mga nakabinbing perjury case ang mga taga-NBI; ang perjury ay isang krimen ng sadyang pagsasabi ng kasinungalingan habang nakasumpa (o under oath) sa harap ng opisyal na may awtoridad na tumanggap ng sinumpaang salaysay. Paliwanag naman ng prosekusyon, napatunayan nilang walang nakabinbing mga kaso laban sa mga testigong inimbitahan mula sa NBI.
Nahirapan lang siguro si Senador Padilla na ipaliwanag ang kanyang punto, pero mabilis na naging usap-usapan ang kanyang pakiusap. Tandaan natin: mandato ng prosekusyon sa isang impeachment trial na patunayang guilty ang akusado. Natural na one-sided sila kasi sila ang tagausig sa taong inirereklamo. Nakatuon sila sa paglalatag ng mga ebidensya, kabilang ang testimonya ng iimbitahan nilang mga testigo. Trabaho naman ng defense na ipagtanggol ang kanilang kliyente, bantayan na napoprotektahan ang karapatan niya, at magpakita ng tinatawag na reasonable doubt. Sabi nga ng House lead prosecutor na si Batangas Representative Gerville Luistro, ang impeachment trial ay “adversarial” o likás na magkakabangga ang magkabilang panig.
Sino ang dapat hindi one-sided?
Ang mga senator-judges, kabilang si Senador Padilla, ang dapat na nasa gitna. Bilang miyembro ng impeachment court, nanumpa silang maging patas at walang kikilingan. Ang kanilang magiging desisyon ay dapat alinsunod sa Konstitusyon at sa mga batas ng bansa, hindi sa kanilang katapatan sa isang tao o pamilya. Ang mga senator-judges, kabilang si Senador Padilla, ang dapat hindi one-sided.
Sa itinatakbo ng impeachment trial, marami ang nakapapansing hindi maitago ng ilang senator-judges ang kanilang pagiging biased o pagiging may kinikilingan. Sa halip na busisiin ang mga ebidensyang inihaharap sa kanila at himayin ang mga testimonyang naririnig nila, nagmimistula silang parte ng defense team ni VP Sara. Hinaharang nila ang paglalabas ng desisyong ipa-subpoena ng impeachment court ang financial at tax records ng bise presidente. Inililihis nila ang usapan palayo kay VP Sara tungo kay PBBM. May mga pagkakataon pang pinupuri nila ang defense team. Sa mga ganitong nakikita ng publiko, hindi maiwasang magduda ng ilan kung may saysay pa ba ang impeachment trial. Alam naman na raw natin kung sino ang boboto para ipawalang-sala si VP Sara.
Malayo man sa sikmura, ‘ika nga, ng mga ordinaryong Pilipino ang nagaganap na impeachment trial, may pangmatagalang epekto ito sa ating buhay. Dito nasusubok kung matatag ba ang ating mga sistema para panagutin ang mga lider nating gumagawa ng mali at umaabuso sa kanilang kapangyarihan. Kung walang impeachment, magpapatuloy ang pagnanakaw sa kaban ng bayan at malayang makapagbabanta sa buhay ng mga tao ang mga nasa posisyon. Ang mga ito dapat ang laging isinasaisip at isinasapuso ng ating mga senator-judges, hindi ang pagtanaw ng utang na loob sa kanilang mga padron sa pulitika o ang pagkapit sa mga maimpluwensyang magpapanalo sa kanila sa eleksyon.
Mga Kapanalig, akmang paalala sa ating mga senador na tumatayong hukom ngayon ang mga salitang ito sa Mga Kawikaan 24:23: “Hindi dapat magtangì sa pagpapairal ng katarungan.” Nakasalalay sa Senado kung paiiralin nila ang katarungan o kung titiklop lang ito sa mga pulitikal na interes at magiging one-sided.
