Gospel Reading for July 29, 2025 – John 11: 19-27

Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother [Lazarus, who had died]. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” Martha said to him, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and anyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.”

Today, we celebrate the Memorial of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, the main characters in the gospel of today.
This gospel reading is quite popular because Jesus brought Lazarus, who had been dead for 4 days already, back to life. It was such a great miracle, that’s why the chief priests and their cohorts plotted to kill Lazarus (John 12: 10-11). More and more Jews started believing in Jesus. How they hated that!
Of course, Lazarus did not live forever after that. He died as we all will. But, Jesus assures us that if we believe in him, which means we follow his ways, we will never die because after our life on earth, we will live with him in ETERNITY. Jesus’ raising Lazarus from the dead shows how powerful God is. Nothing is impossible with him! All we need to do, is to BELIEVE.
Yes Lord, you are the resurrection and the life! We believe in you! We want to follow you always!
