Gospel Reading for September 06, 2025 – Luke 6: 1-5
UNHOLY
While Jesus was going through a field of grain on a sabbath, his disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. Some Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?” Jesus said to them in reply, “Have you not read what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry? How he went into the house of God, took the bread of offering, which only the priests could lawfully eat, ate of it, and shared it with his companions?” Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.”

As always, the Pharisees were so legalistic about the observation of the Sabbath Law that picking of grains and rubbing them so the disciples may have something to eat was considered unlawful. The 3rd Commandment says – Remember to keep holy the Sabbath Day. How can this kind of activity make the Sabbath day UNHOLY?
The Day of the Lord is all about the celebration of life – the life that comes from God. Food sustains that life so food preparation certainly does not make the Lord’s Day UNHOLY. For example, we may think our house becomes holy because we have our own altar and so many statues/icons of Jesus, Mary and the saints, but what makes something holy is when we share God’s love with others, most especially with those who are in need and those who have wronged us. Holiness is not something external but internal.
Lord Jesus, may we understand the true meaning of holiness, and apply it to our lives!
