Dismayado si Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Migrants and Itinerant People chairman, Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos sa magkakaibang pahayag ng mga miyembro ng gabinete ng Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte sa posisyon ng pangulo sa kaso ni Mary Jane Veloso na nasa death row sa Indonesia.
Sa ulat ng Philippine Daily Inquirer kung kino-qoute si Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella na binigyan daw ni Pangulong Duterte si Indonesian President Widodo ng go signal upang bitayin na si Veloso.
Ang ulat ay mariin namang itinanggi ni Department of Agriculture secretary Manny Pinol.
Sa version ni Pinol, sinabi ni Pangulong Duterte kay President Widodo na hindi ito makikialam sa mga batas ng Indonesia at kung paano ito ipinapatupad.
Ayon kay Pinol, hiniling din ng Pangulong Duterte ang clemency sa lahat ng mga Pilipino na nakakulong sa Indonesia.
Ikinalulung ni Bishop Santos ang conflicting reports lalo’t inaasahan ng kanilang ministry na gagawin ng Pangulong Duterte ang lahat ng paraan upang mailigtas sa parusang kamatayan si Veloso at iba pang Pinoy sa Indonesia.
“It is regrettable that we are now getting conflicting reports regarding the actions of President Duterte on Mary Jane Veloso now on death row in Indonesia. It is our hope in the migrants ministry that our government continue with its appeal for her life. At the same time we urge that the court cases against her illegal recruiters be pursued more vigorously as its resolution could help the situation of Mary Jane.
