His Eminence Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle calls for the communication of hope and trust as he opened the awarding ceremony of 39th Catholic Mass Media Awards held the Star Theater in Pasay City last October 25, 2017.

Cardinal Tagle, in his remarks at the start of the awards ceremony, said that the words of a person are the product of what our heart wants.

“Communication is personal, it is about who we are. Communicating hope originates from a heart that knows how to hope. Communicating trust originates from a heart that is trusting. Without the conversion of the heart, communication will be reduced to techniques. And in the end no true communication happens, it becomes manipulation,” Cardinal Tagle said.

For his part, Pasig Bishop and Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Social Communication and Mass Media (CBCP-ECSCMM) head Most Rev. Mylo Hubert Vergara, D.D. in his keynote speech also shared inspirational words to the finalists and other media practitioners present.

“I hope and pray that all of us involved in the field of social communications double our efforts in heeding the call of Pope Francis to bring to light good news storylines of trust and hope in our times instead of ‘fake news’, which incidentally will be the topic of next year’s World Communications Day message. This is an urgent task. This is a daunting challenge,” Bishop Vergara said.

The star-studded awarding ceremony with guests including bishops and members of the clergy from the different parishes and religious organizations, community and civic leaders, mass media practitioners and other communication professionals and communication students.

With the theme “Fear Not For I am with You (Isaiah 43:4) Communicating Hope and Trust in Our Time”, the award giving body have received a total of almost 730 entries from aspiring and current mass media workers from the fields of print, television, radio, advertising, music, cinema, online media, as well as students. Of the entries, 281 works from professional and students mass media categories made it as finalists.

CMMA winners are evaluated upon by the panels of judges in the various categories whose members are chosen by the CMMA board of trustees and confirmed by the Archdiocese of Manila. Named for their integrity, competence, and impartiality, they include communication professionals, academicians, civic and religious leaders, and members of the clergy.

The CMMA  was established by the late Jaime L. Cardinal Sin, then Archbishop of Manila, in 1978 in observance of International Social Communications Day.

Radio Veritas extends its congratulations to the winners of the 39th CMMA.
