Gamitin ang panahon ng Kuwaresma upang makapagnilay sa kahalagahan ng buhay.
Ito ang naging pahayag ni Diocese of Baguio Bishop Victor Bendico kaugnay sa naipasang House Bill 4727 o Death Penalty Bill sa huling pagbasa nito sa Kongreso kahapon.
Ayon kay Bishop Bendico, ang kasalanan ay hindi lamang usaping pang – indibidwal kundi mayroon ring kasalanang sosyolohikal tulad na lamang pagsusulong ng parusang bitay na nakakaapekto sa lipunan lalo sa mga mahihirap.
“In terms of that, that sin is not only something between you and your God. There is social dimension to sin and that is in the way that we relate ourselves with others. And sometimes, in the way we relate ourselves with others, we affect the home, community, we affect the whole society, and so only the death penalty is an issue that we really have to fight, that we really have to give a proper guidance and the part of the people because the church is more on life and that is the very essence of why we celebrate the Lenten season.”pahayag ni Bishop Bendico sa panayam ng Radyo Veritas.
Umaasa pa rin si Bishop Bendico na makikita ng taumbayan at ng ating mga mambabatas ang kahalagahan ng buhay na kaloob ng Diyos lalo na ng ito ay muling mabuhay sa ikatlong araw matapos itong parusahan ng kamatayan sa Krus.

Samantala, inaprubahan ng Kamara sa ikatlo at huling pagbasa ang panukalang pagbuhay ng parusang kamatayan.
Nauna rito, naglabas rin ng liham si Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines at Lingayen Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas upang ipanawagan sa mga mananampalataya na patuloy na ipagdarasal ang mga mambabatas na sila ay maliwanagan sa kanilang pagpabor sa nasabing parusang bitay.(Romeo Ojero)
