Sinimulan ng Stella Maris Philippines ang pagbibigay ng oportunidad sa mga mangingisda sa Olango Island sa Cebu na mapabuti ang kanilang buhay.
Sa tulong ni Stella Maris Philippines National Director Father John Mission at Stella Maris Cebu ay nabuo ang samahan ng mga mangingisda sa isla upang matulungan silang makamit ang mga pangunahing pangangailangan at mga serbisyo ng pamahalaan para sa mga Pilipino.
“Stella Maris Cebu facilitators’ team, through the strong effort and eagerness of our chaplain, Fr. John C. Mission, continued to fulfill the pastoral mission of the Church by reaching out to the local fishermen and their families in the community of Olango Island, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. The team organized a rollout campaign program of Stella Maris Mental Health Matters and Issues and Concerns of Fishers for this island community, Olango Island is a community where the majority of residents depend on fishing as their main source of livelihood,” ayon sa mensahe ng Stella Maris Philippines.
Nagdaos ang Stella Maris Philippines katuwang ang Parokya ng Our Lady of the Rule sa Isla ng mga dayalogo at talakayan sa mga mangingisda upang pangalagaan ang kanilang Mental Health at matukoy ang suliranin na kanilang mga nararanasan.
“The outcomes of the workshop inspired the facilitators and participants to consider a sustainable solution. It was agreed to organize a fisherfolk association during the day’s event. The purpose of this association is to assist members in accessing government programs, particularly those related to livelihood opportunities and insurance for fishermen. The formation of the association was successfully completed, with elected officers who committed to helping sustain the group and serve the interests of their fellow fishers,” bahagi pa ng mensahe ng Stella Maris Philippines.
Namahagi din ang Stella Maris Cebu ng bigas at financial assistance sa mga mangingisda sa lugar.
Sa mga nakalipas na taon na datos ng Philippine Statistic Authority ay kabilang ang mga mangingisda at magsasaka sa mga pinakamahihirap na manggagawa ng Pilipinas.
