Nangamngamba ang CBCP–Episcopal Commission on Migrants and Itinerant Peoples sa kalagayan ng mga overseas Filipino workers sa Estados Unidos matapos ang naging pahayag ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na kakalas na ito sa pakikipag – relasyon sa Amerika.
Umaasa pa rin si Balanga, Bataan Bishop Ruperto Santos, Chairman ng komisyon, na matapos putulin ng pangulong Rodrigo Duterte ang relasyong pulitikal at ekonumikal sa Amerika ay mapapanatili pa rin nito ang matagal ng nabuong matibay na relasyon at kalayaan ng mga Filipino community sa Estados Unidos.
Nanghihinayang rin si Bishop Santos lalo na sa mga Filipino community sa Amerika na maituturing na ikalawa sa pinakamaraming populasyon ng mga Asyanong naninirahan sa Estados Unidos na batay sa 2010 US Census of Major Racial and Ethnic Groups na nasa 3.4 na milyon ang bilang ng mga Pilipino doon.
Maari rin aniyang maapektuhan ang ipinapadalang remittances ng mga OFWs lalo’t ikatatlo ang Pilipinas sa pinakamaraming natatanggap ng remmitances noong 2014 mula na rin sa datos ng World Bank.
Nabatid batay naman sa datos na inilabas ng Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas $26.92 bilyon o katumbas ng P1.20 trilyong piso na naipadalang remittances ng mga OFWs taong 2014, tinatayang nasa P463.20 bilyong piso sa mga ito ay nanggaling sa mga Pilipino sa Estados Unidos.
“While our government might “break ties” with other countries in terms of political and economical directions, the bond of friendship among peoples forged over shared experiences and common values and aspirations would remain strong. Such is the case of our ties with the United States. These have been cultivated and nurtured through the decades with Filipinos now comprising the second highest immigrant population there, their remittances amounting to billions of dollars are among the highest among all the foreign countries that host our kababayan as workers and residents. Let us not expose them to isolationism and suspicion,” bahagi ng pahayag ni Bishop Santos sa panayam ng Veritas Patrol.
Ipinagdarasal naman si Bishop Santos na ang mga patakaran at batas na nais ipatupad ng Duterte administration ay hindi maisakripisyo ang naipundar na goodwill ng mga Pilipino sa ibat ibang bansa sa halip ay magsusulong ng harmony sa mga association of nations.
“In this light we hope that the policies that our government would take would not erode the good will that our migrants have established in other nations. We hope that such policies would not break down bridges of peace and understanding but more so should promote more harmony and generate more friendships among the association of nations in our world. Let us not cut ties but promote inclusive ties so that peoples of different races and faith can live in freedom and peace,” giit pa ni Bishop Santos sa Radyo Veritas.
