The first reading says that Paul is in Rome. At the time, he had no place to stay. He baptized Lydia and her family. St. Luke in the Acts of the Apostles, says Lydia invited Paul to stay with her family. The invitation was providential because from then on, Lydia’s home became the home of Paul in Rome.
Why do we need home bases? Paul needed a home base because he was always traveling. We need home bases to repair our broken wings. We need home bases so we can take a day off. We need home bases so we can rekindle our waning hopes. We all need a home base. A place where we can be ourselves, away from the troubles of work and life, so we can commune with God. This is vital and necessary.
The Gospel says the same thing. We will be brought to prison, killed by our prosecutors and there will even be a time when our persecutors will be honored for killing us and causing trouble for us. We need a home base where we can touch God. We need a home base where we can replenish our troubled spirits.
What is our home base as Christians? The Eucharist. Every time we celebrate the Eucharist, our troubled souls are replenished. Every time we celebrate the Eucharist, our broken dreams are made whole again. Every time we celebrate the Eucharist, grace comes to us in overflowing measure.
I just want you to realize, dear friends, that our home base is not necessarily the Edsa Shrine. The Eucharist can be celebrated anywhere. Our home-friend is not necessarily this priest; this priest is not the only one who can celebrate the Eucharist. Our home base is the Eucharist. Our home base is God. If we are in touch with God everywhere, we are in touch with grace everywhere. This way, wherever we go, our spirits will be replenished.
