Gospel Reading for June 19, 2026 – Matthew 6: 19-23
A MORAL RESPONSIBILITY
Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.
“The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.”

There are those who place such great importance on acquiring wealth that it seems as though their entire life depends on it. While it is true that we need material resources to sustain our daily needs, those needs are limited. We do not need vast riches to live a meaningful life, especially since our time on earth is itself limited. None of us knows how long we will remain here.
Moreover, everything we possess ultimately comes from God. The abundance we enjoy is not meant for ourselves alone. What may be excess for us can be a lifeline for those who struggle each day to provide food, clothing, and shelter for their families. The needs of our neighbors are not merely concerns to be noticed; they are A MORAL RESPONSIBILITY that calls for our compassion and action.
We must constantly remind ourselves that the Final Judgment, which will determine whether we enter the Kingdom of Heaven, will not be based on how much wealth we accumulated, but on how faithfully we shared ourselves and the blessings entrusted to us with those in need.
Lord Jesus, help us never to forget that whatever we do to the least of our brethren, we do unto you. May we recognize your presence in the poor, the hungry, the sick, and the forgotten, and serve them with generous and loving hearts!
