Acts of the Apostles says that Stephen was a man filled with grace and power, who worked great wonders among the people. Certain Jews, members of the Synagogue of Roman Freedmen, debated with Stephen, but proved no match for the wisdom and spirit with which he spoke. They persuaded others to make the charge of blasphemy against him. He was seized and carried before the Sanhedrin.
In his speech, Stephen recalled God’s guidance through Israel’s history, as well as Israel’s idolatry and disobedience. He then claimed that his persecutors were showing this same spirit. “…you always oppose the holy Spirit; you are just like your ancestors” (Acts 7:51b).
Stephen’s speech brought anger from the crowd. “But he, filled with the holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and he said, ‘Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’ …They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. …As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ …‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them’” (Acts 7:55-56, 58a, 59, 60b).

Mga Kapanalig, paano kung ang batas na dapat nagtatanggol sa mga mamamayan ang mismong ginagamit para patahimikin sila?
Noong Agosto 3, inaresto sa Dupax del Norte, Nueva Vizcaya ang isang anti-mining leader na si Florentino Daynos II dahil sa mga kasong grave threats at coercion. Ayon sa kanyang abogado, inaresto siya nang hindi man lamang nakatanggap ng subpoena. Kahit na nakapagpiyansa siya kinabukasan, nananawagan ang Council for People’s Development and Governance na ibasura ang walang basehan at mapanupil na mga kaso laban kay Daynos at iba pang mga tagapagtanggol ng kalikasan.
Kabilang si Daynos sa mga tumututol sa pagmimina sa Nueva Vizcaya. Banta kasi ang pagmimina sa mga sakahan, pinagkukunan ng tubig, biodiversity, at maging sa mga karapatan ng mga katutubo. Hindi rin daw maituturing na tunay na konsultasyon ang ginagawa ng mga mining corporations para makuha ang tinatawag na free, prior, and informed consent mula sa mga maaapektuhang komunidad.
Noong 2025, binigyan ng gobyerno ang Woggle Corporation ng permit para magsagawa ng mineral exploration sa mahigit 3,100 ektarya sa Dupax del Norte. Pero dahil sa matinding pagtutol ng mga residente, pansamantalang sinuspinde ng Mines and Geosciences Bureau (o MGB) ang exploration permit noong Pebrero 2026.
Taóng 2025 din nang bigyan ng MGB at Department of Environment and Natural Resources (o DENR) ng exploration permit ang North Luzon Mineral Resources Corporation (o NLMRC) upang magsagawa ng paghahanap ng ginto at iba pang mineral sa mahigit 4,000 na ektarya ng lupa sa Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya. Ang Kasibu ay 39 na kilometro lamang mula sa Dupax del Norte, kung saan matagal nang lumalaban ang mga residente sa mga proyektong pagmimina.
Kapansin-pansin din ang sunod-sunod na paghahain ng mga kaso laban sa mga environmental defenders at iba pang tumututol sa mga mining projects sa Nueva Vizcaya. Naghain ang NLMRC ng cyberlibel complaint laban sa residenteng si Lei Jin Dugay dahil sa isang social media post. Kinasuhan din ng kompanya ang mga abogado ng komunidad na sina Atty. Edgardo Balgos at Atty. Fidel Santos. Maging sina Bishop Jose Elmer Mangalinao at Fr. Christian Dumangeng, na nakiisa sa isang mapayapang community barricade, ay dati ring kinasuhan ng forcible entry. Halimbawa ang mga ito kung paano ginagamit ang batas sa pamamagitan ng pagsasampa ng mga kaso para takutin at patahimikin ang mga kritiko ng pagmimina.
Tinatawag ng mga human rights at legal groups ang ganitong taktika na Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (o SLAPP). Ito ay mga kasong inihahain hindi para makamit ang hustisya, kundi para takutin, pagastusin, at patahimikin ang mga nagsasalita laban sa mga makapangyarihang interes. Ayon sa Human Rights Watch, dapat ibasura ng mga piskal ang ganitong mga reklamo na ginagamit lamang ng mga kompanya para itikom ng mga tao ang kanilang bibig.
Hindi maihihiwalay ang karapatang pantao sa pangangalaga sa kalikasan. Paalala ni Pope Francis na ang tao ay bahagi ng sangnilikha at hindi maaaring iwalay ang dignidad ng tao sa kalagayan ng kapaligiran Kapag nasisira ang kagubatan, mga ilog, at kabundukan, naaapektuhan din ang kabuhayan, kalusugan, at kinabukasan ng mga taong umaasa sa mga ito. Kaya’t ang pagtatanggol sa kalikasan ay pagtatanggol din sa buhay at karapatan ng tao.
Mga Kapanalig, hindi dapat ituring na krimen ang pagtatanggol sa kalikasan. Lalong hindi dapat gamitin ang batas para patahimikin ang mga taong mapayapang ipinaglalaban ang kanilang mga karapatan. Paalala nga ng Kawikaan 17:15: “Ang humahatol sa walang kasalanan at ang umaayon sa kasamaan, kay Yahweh ay kapwa kasuklam-suklam.” Nawa’y manatiling instrumento ng katarungan ang ating mga batas—hindi sandata laban sa mga taong matapang na ipinaglalaban ang tama at makatarungan.

Lord Jesus,
teach me to be a cheerful giver:

Gospel Reading for August 10, 2026 – John 12: 24-26
LANGUAGE
Jesus said to his disciples: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.”

The four-letter word that best describes dying to oneself is LOVE. If we look at all the teachings of Jesus and the kind of life he lived, everything ultimately points to one thing: LOVE. It is the LANGUAGE of God, and if we are truly his servants, then it must become our LANGUAGE as well.
As St. Paul beautifully describes in his First Letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor. 13:1–13), LOVE never fails. This is not merely romantic love, but agape LOVE—love that expects nothing in return, love that places the needs of others above one’s own, and philia—brotherly and friendly love that binds people together in genuine care and compassion.
True LOVE bears much fruit: joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. It cannot produce bad fruit, because it comes from God himself.
Lord Jesus, help us to allow this LOVE to shape our thoughts, words, and actions, so we may someday attain eternal life with you. Amen.
