On Sept. 20, 1918, Padre Pio received the stigmata while praying in a church. They remained visible on his body for the rest of his life. The stigmata correspond to the wounds suffered by Jesus during his crucifixion.

Padre Pio was deeply connected to his faith starting at an early age. At the age of 5, he consecrated himself to Jesus. When he was 10, his family looked to see how he could become a Capuchin friar.

Some come from his fellow friars who are said to have seen him in prayer outside when they knew he was still in his room. In Alexandria, where Hellenistic philosophy had taken root, the author of Wisdom presents true wisdom as eternal truth imparted by God. Personified as an attractive woman (v. 12), wisdom also appears in Hebrew scripture as Yahweh’s attribute (Prov 8; Sir 24). Present at creation, she helps preserve the universe and is identified with God’s spirit, directing physical and moral life.
Wisdom shares God’s power to order all things: the wise person brings order to personal life as Yahweh does to creation. In this passage, wisdom is alluring and eager to reveal herself (v. 13), seeking devotees (v. 16). She moves through the city and waits at home entrances (vv. 14, 16; Prov 1:20f; 8:1ff). To possess her, one must seek and desire her (vv. 12f) with prudence and vigilance (v. 16). As throughout the book, the author presents Yahweh’s revelation as lifeβs only true wisdom.

Paul repeatedly addresses the Thessaloniansβ concerns about Christβs second coming. Here he asks what will happen to Christians who die before the parousia. Initially, Christ’s return was expected soon; the delay brought deaths that seemed difficult to reconcile with Christian hope, causing anxiety in the community (v. 13).
Paul grounds his answer in doctrine: Christβs resurrection is the foundation and model for believersβ resurrection (v. 14; 1 Cor 15:22f). As God raised Jesus, he will also raise Jesusβ followers, who will not be abandoned (Acts 2:24). Using apocalyptic imageryβthe archangel, trumpet, and descentβPaul describes the end-time sequence (v. 16). The dead will precede the living in the final gathering; Paul still counts himself among the living (v. 15). βWord of the Lordβ introduces a prophetic utterance, not a specific teaching of Jesus.
The Lord’s descent on the clouds echoes Danielβs Son of Man imagery, also used by Jesus (vv. 16f; Dan 7:13; Mt 24:30). The dead and living will be swiftly caught up to the Lord, rescued from worldly distress (v. 17; 2 Cor 12:2; Rev 12:5). Thus all will reach salvation’s goal: union with the Lord (5:10; Phil 1:23).

Preparedness for the Lord’s return is the parableβs central message. Found only in Matthew, it may derive from an earlier saying in Luke (12:35ff) about a master returning from a wedding. Matthewβs version shows signs of editorial development.
The wedding (v. 1), an image of Godβs final union with his people found in Hebrew scripture (Hosea, Canticles) and elsewhere in the New Testament (9:14f; 22:1β14; Rev 21:9f), establishes the parousia setting but does not drive the plot. The “kingdom of heaven” is likened not to the ten virgins, but to the storyβs overall message. The virgins, who would have attended the groom in Palestine, are called “wise” and βfoolishβ (v. 2) because of the outcome, not prior qualities. They represent Christian disciples (2 Cor 11:2). Since all fall asleep, the lesson is readiness, not constant vigilance. The oil symbolizes preparedness; it need not be allegorized as good works (v. 4), though elsewhere βlighted lamps” represent works (5:15f).
The groomβs late-night return signals that the Lord’s coming is uncertain and unexpected (v. 6). The wise virginsβ refusal to share oil (vv. 8β9) should not be assigned a moral lesson: parables make one central point, and secondary details should not be pressed. The excluded virginsβ plea and the groom’s reply (v. 11f) warn of a gap between belief and conduct (5:21f). Election alone does not ensure final salvation. The parable stresses the interval between faith’s beginning and fulfillment: faith must be nurtured and grow in expectation (v. 13; 24:42, 44). This is Christian wisdom.
As we are about to end the liturgical year once again, we are also reminded of the truth about the βendβ of times and/or of our own lives. May we all remain wise (with the wisdom of those eternal verities that the true God imparts to his people; cf. 1st reading) and prepared by keeping our lamps burning (remaining faithful to the Lord, with our lives shining with good deeds) as we wait for the coming of the Lord, whatever the day or the hour. Amen.

Sa kalendaryo ng simbahan ang buwan ng Nobyembre ay nagpapaalaala sa atin ng wakas ng panahon at ng wakas ng ating buhay. Kaya sinimulan natin ito ng pagdalaw sa sementeryo noong November 1 at November 2. Hanggang ngayong Linggo ang mga pagbasa natin ay tungkol sa wakas ng ating buhay. Ito ay darating at hindi natin maiiwasan pero hindi natin ito kinatatakutan. Sinabi ni San Pablo sa ating ikalawang pagbasa na huwag tayong malungkot sa mga namatay na. Si Jesus ay namatay at muling nabuhay. Bubuhayin din ng Diyos ang lahat ng namatay na nananalig kay Jesus β upang isama sa kanya. Kaya ang mga buhay at ang mga namatay ay makakasalubong sa Panginoon pagdating niyang muli upang makapiling niya tayo magpakailanman.
Para sa ating mga Kristiyano ang kamatayan ay hindi ang wakas ng buhay. Ito ay isang pagkikipagtagpo sa Panginoon na pinaniniwalaan at minamahal natin. Sa wakas makakasama na natin siya. Inaabangan natin ang pagkikipagtagpong ito. Ang makakatagpo natin ay ang ating pinaglilingkuran at ang ating minamahal. Kaya ang layunin natin sa buhay ay mahalin ang Panginoon. I love you Jesus. Iyan ang mga huling salita ni Pope Benedict XVI. Iyan din sana ang ating palaging banggitin. I love you Jesus. Mahal kita Jesus.
Ang pakikipagtagpo sa Panginoon ay masaya. Itinutulad ito sa isang kasalanan. Masaya tayong nakikisalo sa kasalanan. May kasaganaan sa kasalanan β maramng pagkain at inumin, may tugtugan, may sayawan, maraming kwentuhan.
Makakasama ba tayo sa kasalan sa kabilang buhay? Oo, kung tayo ay marunong. Ang taong marunong ay well-prepared sa ating inaasahan. Sa ating ebanghelyo ang sampung abay sa kasal ay excited. Isang karangalan kaya ang mapiling abay. Pero naantala ang pagdating ng ikakasal. Lahat sila ay inantok at nakatulog. Pagdating ng ikakasal lumabas ang pagkamatalino ng lima at pagkahangal ng iba. Ang marurunong ay nakahanda. May extra silang langis na dala. Alam nila baka mahuhuli ang ikakasal. Noong humingi sa kanila ng langis ang mga hangal, hindi nila sila binigyan. Matalino sila. Baka kukulangin kung ibabahagi pa nila. Marunong silang mag-calculate. Hindi naman sila sakim, marunong lang sila. Kaya sila ang nakasama sa kasalanan at ang mga hangal ay hindi nakapasok at hindi pinapasok. Ang lesson ng talinhaga: Magbantay kayo, sapagkat hindi ninyo alam ang araw ni ang oras ng pagdating ng wakas. Maging palaging handa. Masaya ang wakas, tulad ito ng kasalan, pero masaya ito kung makakasama tayo sa salu-salo. Magiging malungkot ito sa hindi makasali sa kagalakan ng Diyos β kasi hindi sila marunong, hindi sila wise.
Pinapakita dito ang kahalagahan ng karunungan. Maraming aklat sa Biblia ay tungkol sa karunungan. Ang ating unang pagbasa ay galing sa Aklat ng Karunungan, the Book of Wisdom. Ang taong marunong ay ang taong naghahanap ng totoong mahalaga sa buhay β mga bagay na talagang may value sa buhay na ito at magdadala din sa atin sa buhay na walang hanggan. Nakakalungkot na hindi na ito pinapansin ng marami ngayon. Ang pinagkakaabalahan ng marami ay ang mga pansamantala at mga materyal na bagay lamang. Ang mga materyal na bagay ay hindi tumatagal – lumilipas, nasisira at nabubulok ang mga ito, tulad ng kagandahan, ng gadgets, ng pera, ng pagiging sikat, ng posisyon. Hindi naman ito nagbibigay ng tunay na kaligayahan. Naaaliw lang tayo ng ilang sandali at agad nawawala ang saya natin. Hindi tayo ginawa para sa mga materyal na bagay. Hindi tayo ginawa para sa mga panandalian lang.
Malapit na ang pasko. Inaabangan natin ito, pero kung titingnan natin, mula sa karanasan natin sa maraming paskong dumaan, ang maraming mga pinagkatuwaan natin noon sa pasko ay hindi naman nagbigay ng matagalang kaligayahan. Marami ay pansamantala lang β ang mga damit, ang mga pagkain, ang mga regalo, ang mga bakasyon β wala na ang mga ito.
Paano ba tayo magiging marunong? Huwag tayo mag-alala. Sinabi sa atin sa ating unang pagbasa na ang karunungan ay natatagpuan ng mga naghahanap sa kanya, at nakikita agad ng mga nagpapahalaga sa kanya. Hindi lang na ito ay madaling matagpuan. Ang karunungan mismo ay naghahanap din sa atin. Hinahanap niya ang mga karapat-dapat sa kanya. Makikita ka niya saan ka man naroon.
Ano nga ba ang karunungang ito? Ito ay walang iba kundi ang kalooban ng Diyos. Wala nang mas mahalaga pa at mas mabuti kaysa ang kalooban ng isang mapagmahal at mahabaging Diyos. Madaling hanapin ang kalooban ng Diyos at ang Diyos mismo ay nagpapaalam ng kanyang kalooban sa handang tumanggap sa kanya. Ang kalooban ng Diyos ay nagdadala sa atin sa mga tunay na mahalaga. Maging bukas tayo dito. Hindi niya tinatago ang gusto niya. Pinapaabot niya ito sa atin kasi alam niya na ito ay makakatulong sa atin. Ito ang nagpapaligaya sa atin. Ang kanyang kagustuhan ay walang iba kundi ang ating kaligayahan at kalayaan. Hindi ito nang-aalipin sa atin, bagkus nagbibigay sa atin ng ating tunay na pagkatao at kadakilaan.
Maging marunong po tayo sa buhay. Hanapin natin ang kagustuhan ng Diyos. Pero hindi lang natin ito hahanapin. Gawin natin ito. Gawin natin ang kalugud-lugod sa kanya at magiging masaya tayo. Gawin natin palagi ang kalugud-lugod sa kanya at magiging handa tayo kailan man siya darating. Ang pagkaabalahan natin ay hindi ang pag-calculate o ang paghula kung kailan magugunaw ang mundo, kung kailan tayo mamamatay, kung kailan muli babalik ang Panginoon. Sinabi ni Jesus na walang nakakaalam nito kundi ang Ama na nasa langit. Ang pagkakaabalahan natin ay ang palaging gawin ang kalugud-lugod sa Diyos. Dito tayo magiging marunong sa buhay at maging handa na ang ating ilawan ay nakasindi kailan man darating ang ikakasal at isasama tayo sa kasalang walang hanggan.

Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.
Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise ones replied, ‘No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.’
While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked. Afterwards the other virgins came and said, ‘Lord, Lord, open the door for us!’ But he said in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

St. Paul exhorts us to be βfools for Christββto follow Jesusβ life and teachings faithfully, even when, in the eyes of the world, we may appear foolish, eccentric, or irrational.
However, if we are like the foolish virgins in todayβs Gospel, then we are truly βfoolish Christians.β
It does not matter what the world may say or think. Remaining faithful to Christβs teachings will always keep us ready for his coming into our lives each day and on the last day.
We cannot claim that we will be saved simply because we have been baptized. We need to live out our baptismal promises: to be prophets by witnessing to Christ through our lives; to be kings by serving Christ in those who are in need; and to share in Christβs priestly mission through prayer and offering our lives to God. We cannot depend on others to fulfill our baptismal promises for us and expect to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Neither can we procrastinate, thinking that we still have plenty of time, because we do not know how much time we have left.
A Christian must always be alert lest he or she fall into the traps of the devil. We must constantly nurture our relationship with the Holy Spirit, live lives of prayer, equip ourselves with the Word of God, and bear fruit through charity and fortitude.
SPIRITUAL PREPAREDNESS happens IN THE NOW, not in the future.
Lord Jesus, teach us to live each day as if it were our last. Amen.
