Seeing the energy of the Servant Leadership Conference lingered long after the final blessing. Participants, energized by the shared experience and inspired by the messages of hope and service, continued conversations long into the late afternoon, forging new connections and strengthening existing bonds. The spirit of synodality, so powerfully invoked throughout the event, extended beyond the confines of St. Benilde Gym, promising a ripple effect of positive change across the nation. As such allow me to share a reflection by Seminarian James Tolentino Matre from the Society of the Divine Word …
A powerful wave of synodality surged through St. Benilde Gym, La Salle Green Hills, Mandaluyong City, Philippines, as nearly a thousand participants converged for Serviam’s 2025 Servant Leadership Conference. Under the banner of “Servant Leaders as Pilgrims of Hope,” this landmark event—the foundation’s fourth—responded directly to the Roman Catholic Church’s call for synodality during the Jubilee Year 2025. Led by three prominent Philippine Cardinals, the conference ignited a shared journey of faith, dialogue, and unwavering hope, deeply rooted in God’s boundless love.
His Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, the Serviam Foundation’s Immediate Past Chairman, delivered a transformative keynote address. He didn’t just define servant leadership; he embodied it. With compelling stories, punctuated by humor and profound humility, he challenged attendees to embrace the humble path of Jesus, urging collaboration in Christ’s mission to dismantle division, hatred, and injustice through acts of radical charity and compassion.
His Eminence Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David of Kalookan built upon this foundation, anchoring the message of servant leadership and hope firmly in God’s Living Word while confronting the harsh realities of our times. He boldly denounced radical individualism, painting a powerful picture of servant leaders as a vibrant, mutually supportive community.
Dr. Estela Padilla, a lay theologian and participant in the 2024 Vatican Synod, redefined the synodal path. More than just a concept, she presented it as a dynamic movement—a force capable of unlocking humanity’s inherent goodness by bridging societal divides through inclusive dialogue.
A dynamic panel discussion, expertly moderated by Paterno Esmaquel of Rappler, brought together diverse voices: Senator Risa Hontiveros (government), Mr. Avin Ong (business), and Mr. Dingdong Dantes (arts and culture). Senator Hontiveros illuminated the practical application of servant leadership in public service, advocating for justice, non-violence, and unwavering human rights. Mr. Ong reframed hope as not merely a business strategy, but a moral imperative—a call for inclusive workplaces and a shared responsibility for one another. Mr. Dantes, meanwhile, showcased the inspiring power of servant leadership, emphasizing the importance of appreciating even the smallest moments of joy and goodness amidst life’s challenges—a testament to hope’s enduring strength.
The conference culminated in a deeply moving Eucharistic Celebration, presided over by His Eminence Jose Cardinal Advincula, the foundation’s current chairman. His message resonated powerfully: servant leadership for the common good demands compassionate action, a call to neighborly love echoing the timeless Parable of the Good Samaritan. Immediately following, Rev. Fr. Anton CT Pascual, Serviam Foundation’s Spiritual Director and Caritas Manila’s Executive Director, launched the Servant Leadership Empowerment Program—a comprehensive formation curriculum designed to cultivate future leaders rooted in faith, mission, and compassionate action, perfectly aligned with the vision of the Church’s Jubilee Year.
Fr. Pascual’s expression of gratitude for the overwhelmingly positive response highlighted the conference’s success in fostering active participation through innovative engagement tools like Mentimeter. This resounding success underscores the Serviam Foundation’s and its partners’ unwavering commitment to addressing the urgent needs of our time and spreading the Gospel through servant leadership—a powerful testament to their faith and a beacon of hope for a brighter future, one faithful step at a time.
The Serviam Foundation’s commitment to fostering servant leadership extended beyond the conference itself. The newly launched Servant Leadership Empowerment Program, with its comprehensive curriculum, promises to cultivate a new generation of leaders equipped to tackle the complex challenges facing the Philippines. This initiative represents a long-term investment in the future, ensuring that the spirit of service and hope ignited at the conference will continue to burn brightly for years to come, mirroring Galatians 6:2: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
As participants dispersed, carrying with them the seeds of inspiration and a renewed sense of purpose, the echoes of Cardinal Tagle’s words—a call to embrace humility and act with radical compassion—reverberated in their hearts. The Serviam 2025 Jubilee Year Leadership Conference was not merely an event; it was a catalyst, a powerful force for positive change, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who attended, and inspiring a collective journey towards a more just and compassionate future for the Philippines, guided by the timeless wisdom of John 13:34-35: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
