The literal meaning of “Sabbath” is rest. Sometimes, it is translated as “The Lord’s Day.” It is obligatory to rest on the Sabbath, but this rest has a purpose. It is obligatory to rest on the Sabbath so you can worship God.
Thus, the Sabbath was made not only exclusively for rest, but resting on a Sabbath should also have a purpose, and this is “to worship God.”
Jesus says this in the Gospel. The Sabbath was instituted so we can have rest. We rest so we can worship God—not only in the temple but also in one another because every person is created according to the image and likeness of God. That is why a deed done on a Sabbath, no matter how tiring, glorifies God.
On the other hand, we rest on the Lord’s Day or on Sunday—or holidays of obligation—and worship the Lord. But if this worship does not lead us to serve one another, then we have not fulfilled our Sabbath obligation.
It is obligatory to rest. For people like us who live in the city, we are sometimes compelled to rest because the pressure at work could build up. We rest not only for our bodies. We rest also so we can glorify God in our rest.
Let us thank the Lord for the many opportunities He gives us to rest. Let us beg the Lord for a spirit of generosity so that our rest may also be transformed into love.
