In the Gospel, the Lord is telling us to leave our family in order to follow Him. The requirement seems very clear and very simple: leave family. We are not being asked to live as celibates; we are not being asked to live alone; we are not being asked to break up all families. What the Lord is telling us is that we must not love our family ahead of God. It is good to have a family. But it is secondary only to our relationship with God.
In a manner of speaking, we are being asked to leave our family. Once you have left your family, you become a disciple of the Lord. And when you are a disciple of the Lord, what is your mission? Your mission is to bring your family to the Lord. In other words, we are being asked to leave our family because it is only in detaching ourselves from our family that our family can become truly families of God.
We cannot say we are Christians and yet stay silent about marital separations, broken marriages, and marital infidelities. We cannot say we are Christians and yet cross our arms and say, “I have nothing to do with proposed homosexual unions and drug addiction in the family.” Because when the family is destroyed, the Church will also be destroyed.
I am happy that you are here. You have left work. You have left some preoccupations and chores to do in order to be here. But what about those you have left at home? What about the members of your family who do not believe in what you are doing? Let us pray for them.
