Gospel Reading for January 28, 2025 – Mark 3: 31-35
PART OF HIS FAMILY
The mother of Jesus and his brothers arrived at the house. Standing outside, they sent word to Jesus and called him. A crowd seated around him told him, “Your mother and your brothers and your sisters are outside asking for you.” But he said to them in reply, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

There are those who interpret this reading as Jesus not caring for his mother and relatives. Why will the Son of God, the Saviour of the world, not care for his own mother, who said “yes” to be his mother so he could be born into the world? Why would one who teaches that LOVE is of primary importance in life, not love his own mother? What they do not seem to realize is that Jesus was making all of us, PART OF HIS FAMILY. That is, if we are like his mother in her faithfulness to God; if we are like her in making sacrifices just so our children will grow up according to God’s will; if we also offer our children to God and allow them in their adult years to discover their mission in life, and support them in their mission; etc..
Mary, our Mother, teach us to be like you in your humility and love for God!
