Gospel Reading for February 19, 2025 – Mark 8: 22-26

MOVES US

When Jesus and his disciples arrived at Bethsaida, people brought to him a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. Putting spittle on his eyes he laid his hands on the man and asked, “Do you see anything?” Looking up the man replied, “I see people looking like trees and walking.” Then he laid hands on the man’s eyes a second time and he saw clearly; his sight was restored and he could see everything distinctly. Then he sent him home and said, “Do not even go into the village.”

————
The people brought the blind man to Jesus because he could not go to him on his own. How could he, when he could not see?

In Chapter 9 of John’s gospel, Jesus saw a man bind from birth. The disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” This was because the Jews believed that being handicapped is a sort of punishment for a sin committed. Jesus answered: “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.”

When we are thoughtful of persons with disability (PWD), sick and all others who are needful, the works of God are displayed. Since we are made in God’s image and likeness, our kind acts, our generosity, our thoughtfulness, reveal the beautiful attributes of our Creator. These persons who are in need may look pitiful, but it is this that MOVES US to help them and do good deeds. In a way, they help us too.

Lord Jesus, may we never be blind to those who are in need around us!
