Gospel Reading for November 27, 2025 – Luke 21: 20-28

WILL CEASE

When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you must realise that it will soon be laid desolate. Then those in Judaea must escape to the mountains, those inside the city must leave it, and those in country districts must not take refuge in it. For this is the time of retribution when all that scriptures says must be fulfilled. Alas for those with child, or with babies at the breast, when those days come! ‘For great misery will descend on the land and retribution on this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive to every gentile country; and Jerusalem will be trampled down by the gentiles until their time is complete. ‘There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony, bewildered by the turmoil of the ocean and its waves; men fainting away with terror and fear at what menaces the world, for the powers of heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.’

————

While Jesus was predicting the fall of Jerusalem to the Romans in 70 CE, he also spoke about his final coming in judgment or what we usually describe as the end of the world. The fall of Jerusalem is catastrophic, but it is man-made, therefore, will just pass and is nothing compared to the signs that will happen before Jesus comes with power and great glory.

Through the years, people and even groups predicted and prepared for this second coming of Christ which never happened. NO ONE KNOWS. There is no need to prepare because living each day for Jesus will make us prepared for the biggest event ever. All that we have to remember is what Jesus says, “When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.” Those of us who firmly believe in Jesus and follow him faithfully, need not be afraid. It should even be a time of rejoicing because finally, all evil and the suffering caused by it, WILL CEASE.

Lord, may we be among those who will rejoice because our liberation is near at hand!
