Gospel Reading for February 20, 2026 – Matthew 9: 14-15
MASTERY
The disciples of John approached Jesus and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.”

We fast especially during the Lenten season, when we commemorate how the Bridegroom, Christ, was taken away from His disciples and followers. Through fasting, we unite ourselves to that moment of loss and longing. It is also our way of repenting for our sins and humbly acknowledging our deep need for God’s mercy and compassion.
Fasting has practical benefits as well. It helps us gain MASTERY over our drives, impulses, and desires. Learning to discipline these not only benefits our physical health but also strengthens us spiritually, helping us resist temptation and avoid sin.
Lord Jesus, during this Lenten season, may we practice fasting not only on the days required by the Church, so that we may be cleansed physically, but even more so spiritually. May our fasting draw us closer to You and transform our hearts!
