6th Sunday A

Lev 19:1-2, 17-18
The reading emphasizes the call to holiness, reflecting God’s ‘otherness’ (vv1-2), through moral conduct. It condemns hostility towards neighbors and underscores fraternal correction (v17b), with love for others rooted in self-love (v18b). In the New Testament, this verse together with Deut 6:5 becomes the summation of the entire Christian ethic (Mt 22:37-39; Mk 12:30-31).

1 Cor 3:16-23
Thr passage emphasizes that the Corinthian community is a temple of God, with members as the dwelling of the Spirit, making them holy. This holiness includes moral qualities that set Christians apart, beyond cultic holiness. The imagery links to Paul’s body of Christ, stressing community holiness through union with Christ in the Holy Spirit. Violence against the community is akin to vandalizing a sacred place, and God will respond accordingly. The passage also highlights that God’s community should serve His wisdom, not human heroes. worldly wisdom is temporary, and accepting God’s plan may seem foolish to the worldly, citing Scripture to support this view. Lastly, Paul advises proper community order: ministers serve the community, which belongs to Christ, who is subordinate to God, ensuring authentic church ministry.

Mt 5:38-48
The gospel emphasizes that the Christian life surpasses old norms, reflecting God’s perfection (v48). It addresses retaliation and attitudes toward enemies, extending the command to love all, not just fellow Jews. Jesus abolishes the law of retribution (v38), advocating non-violence and goodness, even when insulted (v40). Lawsuits should be avoided (v40), and generosity shown to those in need (v42). Regarding enemies, Jesus cites Leviticus 19:18, emphasizing love without hatred. Proper relationships with God and others are crucial for authentic church life.

Jesus’ teaching surpasses Mosaic law, emphasizing that Christians should live by the normative standard of unlimited forgiveness and charity, reflecting God’s holiness. May we all forgive and embody this perfect holiness. Amen!
