Gospel Reading for October 30, 2026 – Luke 14: 1-6
NO LIMITS
On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy. Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, “Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?” But they kept silent; so he took the man and, after he had healed him, dismissed him. Then he said to them “Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?” But they were unable to answer his question.

The Pharisees were strongly opposed to healing on the Sabbath because they considered healing to be work, and work was not allowed on the Sabbath.
This was one of the reasons Jesus incurred so much of their anger. Instead of trying to understand his teaching that compassion is most important and that the Laws of God are all about love, they took offense at his actions and plotted ways to discredit, destroy, and even kill him.
Doing good has NO LIMITS. It is not governed by time, day, or occasion. Whenever we have an opportunity to do good and show compassion, whether in big or small ways, it is a great blessing from God because, through these acts, we may one day enjoy eternal life with him.
But Christians should not wait for opportunities to come. Christians are called to go the extra mile by actively looking for opportunities to do good and show compassion.
Lord Jesus, help us to be like you in love and compassion as our way of thanking God for all the blessings we receive each day. Amen.
