Ito ang nilinaw ni Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines- Episcopal Commission on Mission Chairman at Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes.
Bagamat tutol ang Simbahan sa pagkitil ng buhay, inihayag ni Bishop Bastes na maituturing na katanggap-tanggap ang naging aksiyon ng Armed Forces of the Philippines sa pagkakapatay sa dalawang lider ng mga terorista dahil ito ay pamamaraan ng pagtatanggol sa sarili na pinahihintulutan sa moral na teolohiya.
“We are never happy when somebody is killed. We are never when people’s lives are really taken away because it is the most important gift of God – life. So anything that has killing, murdering is not desirable. Now of course the circumstance is this, that the church then allows a kind of death for self-defense because we have arrive also to defend our life,” pahayag ni Bishop Santos.
Dahil sa pagpapalaganap ng takot at karahasan gayundin ang pagsangkot sa mga inosenteng sibilyan sa karahasan, binigyang-diin ng Obispo na moral pa ring maituturing ang hakbang ng tropa ng gobyerno sa dalawang terorista na may layuning kumitil pa ng mas maraming buhay.
“Since these terrorists are promoting terror by even killing people, the killing of these terrorists although not really the ideal one is a right of self-defense. It is a moral thing. It is not also immoral for the government troops to kill people whose mission is to kill others. Because according to moral theology, you are allowed to kill others if they are killing you,” dagdag ng Obispo.
Legitimate defense

2263: “The legitimate defense of persons and societies is not an exception to the prohibition against the murder of the innocent that constitutes intentional killing.”The act of self-defense can have a double effect: the preservation of one’s own life; and the killing of the aggressor. . . . The one is intended, the other is not.”
