Pinapurihan ng Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Pastoral Care for Migrant and Itinerant Peoples matapos na lumipad patungong Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) si Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello III.
Ayon kay Balanga, Bataan Bishop Ruperto Santos, Chairman ng Komisyon, agarang aksyon ang ginagawa ng kalihim ng DOLE upang kamustahin ang kalagayan ng mga overseas Filipino workers sa Saudi upang personal na tignan ang sitwasyon nila doon.
“We at CBCP ECMI welcome the news that our Labor Secretary will go to Saudi Arabia to look into the situation of our OFWs stranded there because of lay offs and other reasons. We wish him well and success in his mission. Our OFWs have been caught by economic downturns in the Middle East because of falling oil prices and other factors,” bahagi ng pahayag ni Bishop Santos sa panayam ng Veritas Patrol.
Hinimok naman ni Bishop Santos ang pamahalaan na gumawa ng konkretong batas na magbibigay kasiguruhan sa mga OFWs na nakikipag-sapalaran sa ibayong dagat.
“We urge our government to come up with a policy that could buffer the effects such as these on our OFWs. While the ideal is not to have our countrymen go abroad to earn a living, our government should insure their rights and well-being when they work abroad. We assure our OFWs of our constant prayers for their safety and security,” giit pa ni Bishop Santos sa Radyo Veritas.
Batay naman sa ulat ng DOLE nasa 11,000 OFWs ang apektado ng mga naluluging kumpanya sa Riyadh at Jeddah sa Saudi Arabia na hindi napapasahod ng tama habang ang ilan naman ay tuluyan ng nawalan ng trabaho. May ilan namang OFW sa Jeddah na mas pinili na lamang magpulot ng basura.
Samantala, kamakailan lamang ay tumungo si Bishop Santos sa Japan upang kamustahin ang mga kababayan natin doon at mga Pilipinong misyonero na nagpapahayag ng habag at malasakit ng Diyos.
