Gospel Reading for July 27, 2024 – Matthew 13: 24-30
BEST PRIZE
Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds. “The Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off. When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well. The slaves of the householder came to him and said, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from?’ He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ His slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ He replied, ‘No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, “First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn.”‘”

1 Peter 5: 8-10 states: “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”
Whether we like it or not, the reality is: evil already exists in the world. During our life on earth we will always find ourselves having to discern whether what we will do is good or not. It is understandable why the Father chose to send his Son and become human, because Jesus taught/showed us how we human beings have to deal with evil; how we may not be devoured by the roaring lion. We need to resist him, stand firm in our faith, and when we find it difficult, ask the Holy Spirit for help and remember that we are not alone in this battle. There are many others, who like us, struggle to fight evil. Let us not get weary doing good because it is to our advantage when we follow Jesus. His promise of eternal life is the BEST PRIZE we can ever get at the end of our life’s journey.
In summary, THE ONLY WAY TO ELIMINATE EVIL IS TO DO GOOD.
Lord Jesus, you are our Shepherd. We want to follow where you lead us!
