Gospel Reading for January 27, 2025 – Mark 3: 22-30
COMMON SENSE
The scribes who had come from Jerusalem said of Jesus, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “By the prince of demons he drives out demons.”
Summoning them, he began to speak to them in parables, “How can Satan drive out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand; that is the end of him. But no one can enter a strong man’s house to plunder his property unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can plunder his house. Amen, I say to you, all sins and all blasphemies that people utter will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin.” For they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.”

Most probably, the scribes who prided themselves with being experts of the Law of Moses, could not accept that there was something their minds could not fathom – that there is such thing as Power to drive out demons. If they really had COMMON SENSE, they would have recognized that Jesus was no ordinary man, because who else can have that kind of power except God?
We ourselves have that Power to drive out the demons that cause us to sin because the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, was sent to us on Pentecost. When we ask the Holy Spirit to dwell in our hearts, the devil becomes frustrated. Let him be! That is his punishment for going against a SUPER POWER. He can never beat God!
Lord Jesus, may we firmly believe that evil will always make us unhappy and can never bring us peace. We can find rest only in you!
