Gospel Reading for October 20, 2025 – Luke 12: 13-21

CONDUITS

Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”

Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”‘ But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.”

————

Indeed, GREED is something that will destroy us. It teaches us not to care and not to share with those in need, the blessings we receive from God each day. It teaches us to do all the foolish and wrong things just so we can acquire more, even at the expense of others, especially the poor. It is what causes corruption and injustices. What makes it worst is that while still on earth, our souls are already burning in hell!

The problem lies in not understanding or not wanting to understand that whatever we receive is a blessing from God, and we are but CONDUITS in channeling these blessings to others, most especially to those in need. All of creation – human beings, animals, plants and trees are entitled to sustenance of life. If we human beings perform our duty of being good stewards of God’s creation, the earth would be healthier than it is today.

Some lines from Jose Mari Chan’s song, say a lot about today’s gospel – “We’re all just merely passing through, doing what we can do in a lifetime . . . it’s not so much what we have,as how we use what we have in our lifetime. Thirty years is worth a hundred and two, it’s really what we can do in our lifetime …”

Lord Jesus, may we, in our own little way, learn to take care of everything that God created by sharing the blessings we receive from you each day!
