Homiliya para sa Huwebes sa Ikapitong Linggo ng Karaniwang Panahon, 27 Pebrero 2025, Mk 9:41-50

Ang pinaka-susi para maintindihan ang ipinupunto ng ating pagbasa ay ang linyang: “Kayo ay KAY KRISTO.” May gantimpala daw sa sinumang magmagandang-loob sa atin dahil tayo ay KAY KRISTO. Ibig sabihin, bilang alagad, ang buhay natin ay bahagi na ng buhay ni Kristo.

Kung minsan, dahil sa galit sa mga nakasakit o nakaperwisyo sa atin, nakapagsasabi tayo ng masasakit na salita, tulad ng: “Bahala ka na sa buhay mo. Wala na akong pakialam sa iyo. Para sa akin, patay ka na.” Parang ang daling sabihin, ano? Pero kung ang taong sinasabihan mo ng ganito dahil sa galit ay naging parte na ng buhay mo dahil minahal mo siya, pwede mo ba talaga siyang basta na lang itapon, putulin o burahin sa alaala at kalimutan?”

Ito ang misteryo ng pagkatao at pagpapakatao na hindi maiiintindihan ng mga taong makasarili o ang prinsipyo ay individualistic. Hindi pwedeng maging ganap ang ating pagkatao sa pag-iisa o sa pamumuhay na parang isla. Habang lumalaki tayo, lumalawak at lumalaki rin ang ating mundo, maraming nadudugtong o nauugnay sa buhay natin, mga taong nagiging kabahagi ng buhay natin, mga taong nakakaisa natin sa puso at diwa. Kaya siguro KAPATID o KAPUTOL ang tawag natin sa mga kaanak natin o ibang mga anak ng mga magulang natin. Hindi sila iba. Para silang kapwa sanga ng iisang puno, kabahagi ng iisang katawan. Kapag nasaktan sila, nasasaktan din tayo. Pag may nangyaring masama sa kanila, apektado tayo. Ang AKO at IKAW, kapag nagkaroon ng kaugnayan ay nagiging KITA sa Tagalog. Walang katumbas ang KITA sa Ingles.

Kaya parang nanunuya ang Panginoon sa mga linyang narinig natin sa ebanghelyo: kahit ano pa ang diperensya ng kamay mo, o paa mo, o mata mo, hindi mo ituturing na solusyon ang basta na lang putulin o ihiwalay ang mga ito. Dahil iisang Espiritu Santo ang dumadaloy sa atin bilang Katawan ni Kristo, pag nasaktan ang kapwa, nasasaktan din tayo. MALASAKIT ang tawag natin dito.
Pwede bang pagtawanan ng mata o ng bibig natin ang ating daliri kung maipit ito sa pinto. Sasabihin ba ng bibig, “Ayan, buti nga sa iyo, tatanga-tanga ka kasi!” Kaya may kasabihan tayo, “Ang sakit ng kalingkingan ay ramdam ng buong katawan.

Ganito rin ang babala ng ating first reading mula sa Aklat ni Sirach. Babala sa mga taong nagkaroon lang konting kayamanan o kapangyarihan ay parang sino na, parang hindi na kailangan ang kapwa, kusang humihiwalay, lumalayo sa mga taong may kaugnayan sa kanila. Nangyayari iyon lalo na sa mga taong punong-puno ng galit at hinanakit sa buhay. Kaya pala ang tawag sa LAST JUDGMENT sa Latin ay DIES IRAE—Araw ng Galit. Sa araw ng paghuhukom, hindi naman galit ng Diyos ang sisindak sa atin, kundi ang epekto ng galit natin. Sa dakong huli, masisindak ang taong kusang humiwalay o tumiwalag sa kalunos-lunos niyang kalagayan. Kapag pinutol natin ang kaugnayan natin sa kapwa, para tayong sangang humiwalay sa puno. Pinili mo ang pagkapahamak mo, ang sariling kamatayan mo. Hindi naman ang Diyos kundi tayo mismo ang magpaparusa sa sarili natin sa pagkakasala.

Minsan, akala natin walang impyerno dahil sinasabi ni San Pablo sa Romans 8: “Sino ang makapaghihiwalay sa atin sa pagibig ng Diyos?” May mahabang listahan pa nga siya na ibibigay. At sa dulo, sasabihin niya nawala daw, kasi totoo naman na ang Diyos gusto niya tayong lahat na maligtas. Pero ano ang magagawa niya kapag tayo ang kusang umayaw, o bumukod, o humiwalay sa kanya? Hindi pala totoong walang makapaghihiwalay sa atin sa pagibig ng Diyos. Meron. Sarili natin. At pag pinagdusa natin ang sarili natin, pinagdurusa rin ang Diyos; inuuit natin ang misteryo ng krus, ang misteryo ng pagpanaog ng Diyos sa impyerno para maibalik niya tayo sa kanyang katawan.

 


CUT IT OFF?

Homily for Thursday of the Seventh Week in Ordinary Time, February 27, 2025, Mk 9:41-50

The key to understanding the message of our readings is the line: “You are IN CHRIST.” There is a reward for anyone who shows kindness to us because we are IN CHRIST. This means that, as His disciples, our lives are now part of Christ’s life.

Sometimes, because of anger towards those who have hurt or wronged us, we may say harsh words, such as: “It’s your life, I don’t care about you anymore. To me, you’re as good as dead.” It seems easy to say, doesn’t it? But if the person you’re speaking this way to is already part of your life because you loved them, can you really just throw them away, cut them off, or erase them from your memory and forget about them?

This is the mystery of being human and living authentically, a mystery that cannot be understood by individualistic people. We cannot be complete in our humanity by being alone or living as if we were an island. As we grow, our world also expands, and many people, places and things are added or connected to our lives, people who become part of our lives, people with whom we get united in heart and spirit. This is why in Tagalog we call our family members KAPATID (literally: “part of me”—they are not strangers. They are like branches of the same tree, part of the same body. When they are hurt, we also are hurt. When something bad happens to them, we are affected. AKO (I) and IKAW (You), when united, in Tagalog become KITA. As one anthropologist notes, we don’t translate I LOVE YOU in Tagalog into AKO MAHAL IKAW. We just say MAHAL KITA. Both the I (ako) and you (Ikaw) get subsumed in KITA. It has no equivalent in English.

That’s why the Lord’s words in the Gospel sound almost ridiculous or even sarcastic: no matter how defective your hand, foot might be, you cannot even imagine going for the simple solution of cutting it off. Because the same Holy Spirit flows through us as the Body of Christ, when the neighbor is hurt, we are also hurt. We call this COMPASSION—malasakit in Tagalog.
Can the eye or the mouth laugh at the finger if it gets caught in a door? Would the mouth say, “Good for you, you’re so stupid!”? That’s why we have a saying, “When the little finger hurts, the whole body feels it.”

This is also the warning in our first reading from the Book of Sirach. It’s a warning to those who, after gaining a little wealth or power, begin to think they are above others, that they no longer need the people they are connected to, and start to distance themselves from them. This often happens to those who are filled with anger and resentment in life. That’s why the LAST JUDGMENT is called “DIES IRAE” in Latin—The Day of Wrath. On the Day of Judgment, it is not God’s wrath that will terrify us, but the effect of our own wrath. In the end, it will be the person who has willingly separated himself from God who will end up miserably. When we cut ourselves off from others, we’re like a branch that gets separated from the tree. That’s how we choose our own destruction, our own death. It’s not God who punishes us, but we ourselves; we bring suffering upon ourselves due to our sin.

Sometimes, because we know that hell is separation from God, we think there is no hell because St. Paul says in Romans 8, “Who can separate us from the love of God?” He even gives a long list of possibilities. And in the end, he says nothing can separate us from God, because it’s true that God wants all of us to be saved. But what can God do if we choose to reject him, if we voluntarily separate, or distance ourselves from Him? It turns out that it’s not true that nothing can separate us from God’s love. Something can: ourselves. And when we cause ourselves to suffer, we also make God suffer. We re-enact the mystery of the passion and death of Christ on the cross, the mystery of the God who descends into hell, if only to get us out of there and bring us back into His body.
