When you hear this Gospel, you will likely be inclined to put yourself among those who are inviting and hosting the party. Thus, the lesson that would strike us is that we should invite “to our party” the crippled, the lame, and the poor.
But for your information, Jesus gives us this Gospel not to teach us about who the people we should invite are. In this Gospel, Jesus does not tell us to follow His example. That is not the main intention. The main intention of the Gospel is that Jesus is telling us, “You are crippled, you are poor, and I am here, inviting you. Be grateful to me.”
Because if we are grateful and aware of the fact that we are unworthy, then we will be motivated to invite and do to others what Jesus gives and does to us. It becomes difficult for us to invite the poor, the marginalized, the crippled, and the outcast because we have never considered ourselves crippled enough, poor enough, bad enough, rejected enough, or sinful enough.
We think that we are here in the church because we are all good. Let’s forget all these foolish thoughts. God invites us here not because we are good, but because God loves the crippled, the blind, and the poor, and we all belong to that company.
Let us be aware of the goodness of God to us. Sometimes we can take this goodness for granted because we are so conscious of our own goodness. Let us be aware of our own unworthiness, and then the goodness of God becomes even more beautiful.
