Gospel Reading for August 17, 2024 – Matthew 19: 13-15

FIRST CATECHISTS

Children were brought to Jesus that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” After he placed his hands on them, he went away.

————

Who brought the children to Jesus? Perhaps the parents or their relatives? Unlike the disciples, they knew very well the importance of bringing their children to Jesus so he might lay his hands on them and pray over on them.

Having their children baptized is very thoughtful of parents, but making their baptism come alive is the duty of their parents. Parents have to be the FIRST CATECHISTS of their children. The children learn about Jesus, his life and teachings from them. They need not wait for the children to learn all these, and learn how to pray in religion class. Sometimes, parents think that sending their children to Catholic/Christian schools is enough to fulfill their Christian obligation. Parents will be blessed for teaching their children about God: a) It will prompt them to live what they teach, therefore, making them good Christian parents; b) Their children will look up to them for having wisdom on spiritual things; c) Their children will grow up as they should and belong to the Kingdom of heaven; d) Their children will be a source of joy in their family; and so many more.

Needless to say, parents have to make an effort to know more about Jesus, his life and teachings. There are many churches who offer courses/seminars for free. There are even online podcasts that will help parents know more about the Faith.

Lord, may parents be aware of their great responsibility to be the FIRST CATECHISTS of their children!
