Gospel Reading for May 18, 2026 – John 16: 29-33

ALWAYS WITH US

The disciples said to Jesus, “Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God.” Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now? Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me. I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.”

————

When Jesus was arrested, the disciples—except for John—went into hiding. In fact, in Jerusalem, there is a place to which Catholics traditionally process after the Mass of the Lord’s Supper from the Church of All Nations: the Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu, where Peter is believed to have wept bitterly after denying Jesus three times.

Yet despite being abandoned by his disciples, Jesus did not feel alone because the Father was with him.

This is something we must always remember as we sail through the rough seas of life: even if everyone else abandons us, we are never truly alone, because God is ALWAYS WITH US!
Let us ponder on this beautiful song written in 1945 by Rodgers and Hammerstein II, for the movie – Carousel, YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE –

When you walk through a storm
hold your head up high,
and don’t be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm
is a golden sky
and the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,
walk on through the rain,
though your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on, walk on
with hope in your heart
and you’ll never walk alone.
You’ll never walk alone!

When we walk with Jesus, we will never walk alone!
