We need a political reform – economists
“We need a political reform.”
This was the common sentiment of Ibon Foundation Executive Director Sonny Africa, Social Sciences Dean of the Ateneo de Manila University Dr. Fernando Aldaba and International Chamber of Commerce Director General Jess Varela in the sixth Veritas Servant Leadership Halalan Forum.
Africa said that the foresight of the political leaders is being affected by political dynasty.
“Sa lahat ng mgakandidato ngayon, ang si-safe ng sinasabi nila. Kasi ang
foresight nila, kung magsabi sila ng mas radikal na political reform, mas radikal na economic reform alam nila ‘yung kanilang mga backers sa political families sa probinsya, yung kanilangmga backers sa malalaking negosyante at mga backers nila sa gobyerno, aatras sila. Nakakabara sa totoong vision, sa totoong panananaw ng demokratikong Pilipinas ay yung kanilang foresight na ‘yung kanilang supporters ay aatras kung ilatag nila ang tanaw o yung vision nila,” Africa said.
He even said that and that we cannot just let a single person to handle constitutional contract we need to have a political reform.
“Kelangang i-reform ang political parties natin. Kasi even ‘yung concept ng constitutional contract kung nakasalalay yun sa isang Presidente e may problema pa rin tayo dun e. Bagamat iniisip natin hakbang pasulong yun na napagkasunduan, napapatupad. Pero tingin namin sa long term view, sa foresight, paurong yun kasi inaasa mo sa isang indibidwal yung programa. Ang mas mahalaga ang paunlarin natin yung partido kasi nga ibig sabihin nun, kung hindi ipatupad ng partido nya sa tatlong taon o six years paparusahan sya dapat ng publiko,” Africa added.
In connection with what Africa said, Dr. Aldaba added that we need reforms in terms of political dynasty that included aspects such as election spending and campaign funding.
“Kelangan meron tayong reporma ukol sa political dynasty. Siguro isang kaugnay ang reporma dyan ay yung election spending, yung campaign funding, dapat yan matagal ng inaayos sa Kongreso pero hanggang ngayon hindi pa din mapasa-pasa yung mga reporma tungkol sa campaign finance,” Dr. Aldaba said.
He also said that what we need is to mold a political party who has a stable program for the common good.
“Ang problema din natin, kelangan nating maghubog ng partido political na may programa. Kasi nangyayari ngayon, kung sino president gagawa ng bagong political party o coalition para sumuporta sa kanya. Iilan-ilan lang ‘yung mga partido politikal ditto na may programa talaga na nagiging stable. So kelangan isang malaking bahagi yun ng political reform, “ Dr. Aldaba explained.
For his part, Varela advised the electorates to look on the track records of the candidates because it will help them determine who really has a foresight among them.
“Siyempre kapag tinanong mo lahat ng mga kandidato may foresight na maganda. Itong mga foresight na ‘to. Makikita natin yan sa mga ginagawa nila dati, yung track record. Kasi papano mo malalaman kung may ginagawa ba ang isang tao o ano ba ang nagawa nya sa kanyang pampubliko, pampribado o kunwarisa kumpanya, makikita, pag-aaralan mo yan. Pag sinabi nyang ito ang magagawa ko, kaya ba niya?” Varela said.
