ETERNALLY PRESENT
The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Jesus said to the Jewish crowds: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”
The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

This discourse of Jesus about being the Bread of Life came after he had fed the five thousand. The Jews followed him wherever he went, perhaps thinking that if they stayed close to him, they would never go hungry. After all, he could simply multiply bread whenever they needed something to eat.
Jesus took this opportunity to reveal a much deeper truth. While the people were concerned about their physical hunger, he wanted to teach them about a different kind of nourishment. He declared himself to be the Bread of Life—the living bread that came down from heaven, the bread that gives eternal life to those who partake of it.
Naturally, the Jews found his words difficult to understand. How could they eat his flesh and drink his blood? They did not realize that Jesus was speaking about a future reality, a time when he would no longer be physically present among them. Yet he desired to remain with his followers in a profound and intimate way through the Eucharist, under the appearances of bread and wine.
Jesus had everything planned from the very beginning. Although his listeners could not yet grasp the meaning of his words, he was already preparing them for what was to come. He had to begin teaching about the Eucharist long before it was instituted. At the Last Supper, he did not merely speak about it; he gave it. There, he offered his Body as bread and his Blood as wine, establishing a direct connection with his teaching that he is the Bread of Life.
The Last Supper was a sacred and solemn meal filled with profound meaning. In many ways, it foreshadowed the Eucharistic celebration that we continue to celebrate today. Every Mass makes present that same sacrifice and that same gift of love.
What a marvelous plan of God! Jesus chose to remain ETERNALLY PRESENT with his people even after returning to the Father. He made himself available to us in the form of food—something essential to human life in every age. Just as our bodies cannot survive without food, our souls also need nourishment. Yet earthly food sustains us only for a time, while the Bread of Life nourishes us for eternity.
Let us ponder on this song written by Fr. Danilo Isidro, SJ and Fr. Fruto Ramirez, SJ, ITO ANG AKING KATAWAN –
