INTEGRATED WAY OF LIFE

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

The late Pope Francis designated September 1 as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. In the Philippines, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) continues to observe this date as a special day of prayer and reflection on our responsibility to care for God’s creation.

In his encyclical Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home (2015), Pope Francis echoes the beautiful Canticle of St. Francis of Assisi, reminding us that our common home is “like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us.” Creation is not merely a resource to be exploited; it is God’s precious gift that nurtures, sustains, and shelters all forms of life.

Recent natural disasters remind us of how fragile our common home has become. The devastating glacial collapse that triggered deadly landslides in Nepal and Tibet is still being studied by scientists, but many researchers believe that warming temperatures and the thawing of high-altitude permafrost may have contributed to the disaster. Similar risks are being monitored in many mountainous regions around the world as glaciers continue to melt.

The melting of glaciers and polar ice also contributes to rising sea levels, threatening coastal communities and island nations like ours, while countless plants and animals face the loss of their natural habitats. These are sobering reminders that the effects of climate change are no longer distant possibilities—they are realities already affecting many parts of the world.
Environmental scientists have long warned about excessive greenhouse gas emissions and their contribution to global warming. The question is: Are governments, industries, and ordinary citizens truly listening? More importantly, are we taking concrete steps now to prevent even greater harm to human life and to creation?

As Christians, caring for creation is not optional; it is part of our vocation. God entrusted the earth to us, not as owners who may exploit it without limits, but as stewards who are called to protect and cultivate it with love and responsibility. Since creation sustains both humanity and every living creature, neglecting it ultimately harms us as well.

Our practice of the Christian faith cannot be limited to attending Mass, participating in Church activities, or helping the poor and the needy. It must be an INTEGRATED WAY OF LIFE—one that reflects our love for God in the way we treat our neighbor and the world he has entrusted to our care.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that life is more important than wealth. The relentless pursuit of money and material gain can lead to denuded forests, polluted air and waterways, the destruction of ecosystems, and practices that contribute to global warming. God has already provided everything we truly need. Our task is not only to receive his gifts, but also to care for them so that they may continue to sustain present and future generations.

Lord Jesus, open our eyes to see creation as your gift and our sacred responsibility. May we become faithful stewards of our common home, living simple, grateful, and compassionate lives that protect the earth and all the life you have created. Amen.
