The Church has the mission of proclaiming the Gospel until the end of time and today.

Church knows that it requires using media and other means of social communication.

Radio, which is considered one of the dying media in today’s digital age, remains to be the number one means for communication.

Because of this SIGNIS–World Catholic Association for Communication continues to enhance networking among radios at international and national level.

In the same way SIGNIS wanted to promote multi-channeling that would widen the reach of radio through the use of interactive social networking, radio streaming, radio apps and other trans-media platform.

With this being said, SIGNIS Asia brought together professional Catholics working and acting in the secular realm of modern media particularly in the Radio industry to undergo an intense Radio Training Seminar hosted by the SIGNIS Philippines.

With the theme “Radio – Supporting the Development of Catholic and Community Radio” the 25 representatives from SIGNIS Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Timor Leste and the Philippines hustled for five whole days to create possible action plan that could foster the awareness of listening to the radio.

The 5-day Radio Training was held in Communication Foundation for Asia from November 5 – 9, 2018.

The Radio Training Seminar was composed of 16 Sessions that was given by the following facilitators:
• Mr. Bernard F. Canaberal, President of Signis Philippines, Radio Professional
• Mr. Seungwal Francis Kim, Radio Professional, Tresurer of Signis Asia
• Fr. Anthoius G A Lalu, President of Signis Indonesia, Radio Professional
• Ms. Bernadetta Widiandajani, Secretary of Signis Asia, Radio Desk Chair
• Fr. Francis Lucas, President of Catholic Media Network
• Bro. Clifford Sorita, Strategic Consultant of Radio Veritas Philippines

Aside from the serious and intense radio training, workshop and seminar, the participants also made a visit to the different community radio stations in Metro Manila through a series of studio tours.

The delegates went to DWIZ 882 (AM), Home Radio (FM), DZRH (AM) and to DZRV RADIO VERITAS Philippines (Catholic Radio – AM).

SIGNIS Philippines also treated the delegates with a warm Filipino hospitality by providing the delegates an exposure to the local culture and history of Catholicism in the Philippines by arranging cultural tour in Intramuros, Manila which is known as the Walled City in the capital of the Philippines.

The delegates also had a chance to explore the Minor Basilica and Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception also known as Manila Cathedral and personally met the Cardinal of the Archdiocese of Manila, His Eminence Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, where he challenged everyone to be an instrument and active missionary of the Church’s mission through the use of Radio.

According to Cardinal Tagle, “in the Bible, it does not say ‘Read the Word of God’, it says, ‘Listen to the Word of God’.”

Consequently, he added that the delegates should look for exciting opportunities for mission through Social Communications on how to make the Word of God creatively available, that listening will tantamount to reading the Bible and hearing the Word of God.

Finally, apart from the real purpose o

f the gathering to come up with strategies to support the development of Catholic and Community Radio, the participants did not just find different possible approach for the said goal, but everyone decided to be connected with one another in order to continue empowering each other in their mission to use the Radio as a medium to spread the Word of God.
